I met Palmerston once near the bottom of King Charles Street. I was delighted. He just glared at me. RIP.

Fascinating piece, well worth a read. Especially regarding Cuban interests in Venezuela and what might come next.
Good Morning and welcome to another episode of regime change by the USA. The US seems to be militarily trying to get rid of Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro right now. There are reports of US ground forces in action. However, watch the Cubans too. open.substack.com/pub/phillips...

Watching BBC Alba Hogmanay coverage and not one of these people has ever taken part in, seen or possibly even heard of the Canadian Barn Dance.

RIP Graham Greene. Every time he popped up on screen when I was a kid, my mom would excitedly point him out for being an actual Native on the screen. Able to be deadly serious and infinitely hilarious (even in smaller roles like Last of Us), he ate up the screen. Nʌki’wah brother.

in britain the anchorites of asda dwell by the sacred stones, solemnly intoning the words “that’s asda price”, and performing the necessary ritual (the double bum slap) three times a day to bring about the great rolling back when we will all be redeemed
One for @urbanprehistorian.bsky.social - I was reading this morning about the Asda 'Price Promise' stones that were erected across the country in the 90s

Some are definitely on the way to being archaeological monuments, such as this one in Trumfleet, South Yorkshire

An Ayrshire icon.
A very sad day for Scotland as STV legend Glen Michael has died at the grand old age of 99. From 1966 to 1992, Glen helmed the best kids programme in Scotland, one that occasionally got 90% audience share, and brought a wide variety of brilliant American cartoons to this side of the Atlantic.

Genuinely quite sad about this. Admiral Piett was one of my favourite minor characters in the original Star Wars films. Ken Colley's expressions and screen presence made him a stand out.
Kenneth Colley, who played Admiral Piett in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, has passed away at the age of 87 due to complications from COVID and pneumonia. May the Force be with you, always.

Not remotely surprised. I was in the Uffizi about 2 weeks ago and it was like the Wild West. Hoardes of tourists getting up close for selfies with the Birth of Venus and Da Vinci sketches and nobody doing a damn thing about it.
Restrictions will be placed on visitors taking selfies at the Uffizi Galleries in Florence after a tourist damaged an 18th-century portrait while posing for a photograph, the gallery's director confirmed today.
