Dems aren’t the owner of that decision, though. The GOP is fighting a court order to fund SNAP. The GOP can kill the filibuster and reopen the gov’t without a single Dem vote. The GOP wants to take away healthcare, and is willing to starve people to do it. The GOP owns this, entirely. Not the Dems!
I think one thing we lose sight of is that it’s really easy to chant that we gotta touch the stove, and it’s a completely different thing to be the owner of the ongoing decision that 40 million people gotta go hungry. That’s a heavy thing and I’m not at all surprised that some Dems are worried.

Trump, of course, is lying. "When I was president the number was a tiny fraction of what it is now" is simply not true. In 2017, Trump's first year, SNAP participation was at 42.3 million. The highest year of SNAP participation under Biden was 42.2mil. As of May, it's 41.7mil, the same as 2024.
Trump on SNAP: "Our country has to remain very liquid because problems, catastrophes, wars -- it could be anything. We have to remain liquid. We can't give everything away."
