Discworld QOTD, from Snuff

"You should look for those who can’t believe that the law would ever catch them, who believe that they act out of a right that the rest of us do not have. The job of the officer of the law is to let them know that they are wrong!"
Discworld QOTD, from I Shall Wear Midnight

"Witches knew that mysterious omens were around all the time. The world was always nearly drowning in mysterious omens. You just had to pick the one that was convenient."

This book is so good and it's funny and there aren't enough funny books in the world. You can get it for less than a dollar so why wouldn't you? Get yourself a little holiday treat. A great read for the price of one chicken nugget.
No one ever tells me these things, so I just discovered that the Kindle ebook of first Coop heist novel, THE EVERYTHING BOX, is on sale for a lousy $.99. You can't even buy a three-legged hamster for $.99, so get a bunch of my books instead. 🐹

The deleted files referenced (but did not include) memos which relate to the deliberations of DoJ about who they should investigate.

Journalists, here’s the story. A set of memos that have yet to be disclosed - and mentioning they even exist was hot enough to remove pointers within hours.
Ut oh. DOJ posted a bunch of deliberative files on 2019 prosecutorial decisions, then took it all down.

I guess Todd Blanche feels like he has to directly compete with Bari Weiss for stupidity?

New trove of apparent Epstein files posted on DOJ site disappear
The Justice Department didn’t respond to requests for comment on the new documents or the decision to remove them.

I don’t mean to sound extreme, but I don’t think we should have torture camps for people with criminal records either.

If you want to follow CECOT news beyond the CBS story, it is still playing out in the courts.
BREAKING: Judge James Boasberg rules for those deported under the Alien Enemies Act on March 15 — certifying a class, finding the U.S. maintained constructive custody over them at CECOT, finding they were not given due process, and ordering return or that such process be given by Jan. 5, 2026.

Some folks seem to think that criticizing Democratic politicians is off-limits because the GOP is "worse." I expect nothing from the GOP; they are obviously a part of racists and Nazis. I DO expect something from the political party purporting to represent the "resistance."

You can very clearly see why someone whose job it is to protect war criminals would need this pulled from the airwaves: It’s visible proof the Trump administration is operating concentration camps.

This has been made available, so for purposes of commenting on Bari Weiss's decision to spike the story, here's a live-post of that segment.

It begins with a "you may recall" summary of the deportation to el Salvador. Describes the admin's claim that it could deport the men without due process

yeah I have so many people replying to me like "they don't plan to answer to the voters"

I mean of course they don't but their "plan" is, by all appearances, of underpants gnomes level of sophistication.

1) Do crime in public.
2) ???
3) Never lose power.
i know one view is that "they don't intend to lose power" but i honestly think this gives them way too much credit.

My standard response is "tell me, in specific detail, how exactly I'll be 'left behind,'" and to date not a single techbro has ever answered the question. "You'll be left behind" is a statement of religious faith, not business fact, and should be treated as such.
So the “figure out how to use it lest you be left behind” replies about ‘AI’ that have been popping up here strike me as inauthentic but also kind of funny because they grant the point that rather than an automation panacea these technologies are quite difficult to figure out how to use effectively

I will keep saying this.

If you bought a calculator and it EVEN ONCE told you 2+2=5, you’d throw it out and demand a refund.

If you had an employee who lied confidently to you, and was easily caught, you’d fire them.

LLMs are the untrustworthy calculator and the confident liar.

Fire them.
suspect a big reason why many academics and others who work in areas where getting facts RIGHT is key are disinterested in using LLMs for research:

they’ve tried it, they keep noticing major errors in output, and they conclude that having to verify all that doesn’t actually save them time.

Please, from a Californian: Just say no to Newsom
Newsom isn't the one.

Refused to back taxing billionaire, says they're part of the big tent.

Gets money from the broligarchy.

Still sucks up to AIPAC.

Threw transgender people under the bus when he interviewed Charlie Kirk and Bannon on HIS podcast.

He won't reform anything. We deserve better.
