fascinated to learn that paris has "social mixing" targets that require more social housing to be constructed in neighborhoods with a smaller stock of existing social housing and vice versa

portland city council needs more focus, but it also isn’t passing enough ordinances. we also need a stronger city council president, but not like multnomah county where the problem is that the county chair has too much power

one of the weirdest dumb ideas in US traffic engineering is the assumption that streets choked with personal vehicle traffic will make for easy freight deliveries
I actually think freight should have priority on more than one street downtown.

That doesn't mean they're all designed to accommodate a WB-67 semi, but it would mean loading is prioritized at the curb more than short term parking.
Looking forward to the Wilson Administration getting a crack at the draft Downtown Seattle regional center plan. As it stands right now, we're apparently only planning on public transit having priority on one single street downtown, which is wild.

good thread. wish it wasn’t topical
2025 was brutal for US transit. Agencies faced budget deficits, flat ridership, and open hostility from the White House.

I wrote a series of stories outlining ways to help transit endure.

Lesson #1: Whatever you do, don’t cut service. Riders will leave – permanently.

Here are a few others 🧵
The Last Thing US Transit Agencies Should Do Now
Rising costs and widening deficits as pandemic aid runs out are challenging bus and train operators in many cities. But cutting service needs to be a last resort.

I’m skeptical about mutual aid as a campaign strategy but if you want evidence about what campaign strategies work you do need people to periodically try stuff that conventional wisdom says is not a maximally efficient use of campaign $$

none of you are ready for avatar cultural hegemony
look, you’re going to watch it along with hundreds of millions of other people and it’s going to be an amazing three and a half hours and then like a Pop Rock on the tongue it will be gone

Cutting property taxes for Oregonians affected by wildfires. Canceling planned freeway tolls. Pausing local new taxes in the Portland area. We have to keep going to make life more affordable for Oregonians.
