I dunno how, but someone needs to come up with YIMBYism for commercial spaces.
After housing, this is the next big zoning reform: the right to do business. Always found it odd that the USA, supposedly the land of the free market, makes it the hard if not outright illegal to open a business in most places.

Like many other planning failures, this one's also rooted in racism.
The al pastor taco truck at sleepy North Berkeley BART is booming every night with neighbors, cyclists and families. Imagine what we could do with fully legalized street vending citywide.

bro they're making you slightly trapezoidal in the group chat right now
Sitting here open-mouthed at this Sound Transit board presentation, because it was just explained that making Ballard Link's Seattle Center station "slightly trapezoidal" would save the agency a HALF BILLION DOLLARS.

Congratulations to @senkhanhpham.bsky.social, who earnestly studied this boring but important policy issue, changed HER OWN mind on it, pushed through a year of painstaking negotiations after I personally was ready to leave it for dead, & finally came out with a green light from everyone. 🏆

a 50+% farebox recovery ratio is unusual for combined bus + rail systems and basically unheard of in the US en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farebox...

I get it, I miss soft pretzels and arcades too. but saving the dead mall isn't going to bring back 1994. Same energy keeps Memorial Coliseum as an aging husk instead of the AAA baseball stadium for the Beavers in 2010. We can be more audacious than a dead mall.

When Border Patrol shot two immigrants in Portland, they claimed they had ties to gangs. The Guardian later wrote a story exposing those claims as a smear campaign, but the narrative was regurgitated by city leadership that took DHS at their word.

Now we see the true agitators in Eugene were DHS.
🚨🚨🚨Video captures a DHS employee break the window at the Eugene Oregon Fed Building.

They declared a riot and tear gassed everyone over it.

Oregon lawmakers on the hunt for money to balance the state’s transportation budget offered a look Tuesday at the difficult math problem before them. Lawmakers are looking at freezing open positions and pulling money from certain programs as they work to avoid deep layoffs at ODOT.

whenever you get people on the left saying that environmental review timelines and zoning codes don't matter and what's actually important are abstract debates about deregulation this is all I can think of

that’s right: portland’s TUF should include discounts for car free households, transit riders, and low income households, just like TUFs in other cities in the portland metro
Love being told that I, a non-car-owner, need to pay the same rate as my neighbors who own four 5+ ton death machines that will continue to rip up our roads.

Having to cough up $150/year to subsidize "free" parking, Autonomous Tesla pedo-mobiles and monster-sized SUV's/Trucks is NO from me.

As the mass timber industry continues to grow, I’m interested in how we can make sure these new jobs are good-paying jobs, and that East Portland’s students have pathways into mass timber careers.

Aside from all the other reasons not to believe these people, every one of the “vehicle attacks” I’ve seen scrutinized were either totally phony -like Renee Goods. Or ones where like an ice agent rammed the purported assailant. Like that woman in Chicago
Ricketts: "No face masks -- we're seen a huge increase in attacks on our ICE agents. There's been 180 vehicle attacks. Overall attacks on DHS are up 8,000%. There's many so many doxxings of officers they've had to set up a tip line. This is very very serious."

thank you bad bunny for highlighting the importance of critical power distribution infrastructure bsky.app/profile/cost...
It’s the weekend everyone, so you know what that means. Time to drink two polar seltzers and do a thread on the power transformer shortage. Without transformers, we don’t get a clean energy transition. And as energysky knows, there’s been a shortage due to covid, supply chain, & labor constraints 🔌🔋
