In the last Finance Committee meeting, we advanced a resolution to expand legal assistance for immigrants and refugees.

I see this as an important first step. But we need to have a longer term conversation about how we support immigrant and refugee communities in a more sustainable way.

On the surface, last night’s inaugural meeting of the Community Board for Police Accountability was like any other, routine meeting of one of the City’s many appointed boards, commissions and committees – Portlanders seated around a nondescript conference room.

Good afternoon, Portland! At today’s meeting we’ll be considering appointments to the Community Board for Police Accountability, an Enterprise Zone change for PDX, and more. Follow along here while I post #LiveFromPDXCouncil26

“There are so many ways people fall into homelessness and that’s the math problem,” [Here Together Director Angela Martin] said. “Our money is being spent moving people out of homelessness, but we’ve got a whole lot of system failures that push people in at a faster rate than we’re moving them out.”
ICYMI - Even as the homeless count has ticked steadily upward for five years running, the three counties have collectively met, or are on track to meet this year, the initial 10-year performance goals set for them in the measure. www.oregonlive.com/politics/202...

The council president elections were just last month, but it feels almost like a lifetime ago with everything that’s happened between now and then. With some distance, I’ve been reflecting about what that moment really said about where we are – not just as a Council, but as a city.

It is deeply troubling that the City lost track of tens of millions of dollars intended for affordable housing at a moment when Portlanders are being priced out of their homes and pushed into homelessness faster than we can house them. 🧵
