Like many of you, I heard this morning that @jvegapederson.bsky.social is not seeking reelection next year. I wish her well in whatever she does next. I want to thank her for her commitment to Multnomah County. #Multco

A message from Commissioner Singleton. On Thursday, November 6th, several schools in North Portland went into lockdown due to I.C.E kidnapping and heightened presence in the area. This led to fear, confusion, and community coming together. "It broke my heart to hear schools in North Portland had to go into lockdown because of the I.C.E presence in the community. My staff was contacted by several County employees at impacted schools and in the area with questions and asks for support. Kids should not have to worry about their parents, teachers, classmates, or anyone being kidnapped by ICE for taking them to and from school." " Yesterday, I went to one of the impacted schools at dismissal time, and my heart was warmed by seeing so many concerned community members showing up to support our little ones. Multnomah County residents showed up for each other, and it was beautiful. Many have continued to contact my office asking how they can help, so I have gathered some information." Get Educated! There are trainings to help people recognize and report I.C.E. Last Friday the Board spoke about food systems and ways we can support families in need. Please visit www.multco.us/food for more info about resources. Big thanks to businesses in my district like Mikiko Mochi Donuts, DB Dessert Company, El Sombrero Tapatio, Red Sauce Pizza, Miss Delta, and more.
There you'll find a list of resources and information to help understand the crisis we are in and how you can provide support. It will be updated regularly. Please remember that financial donations go further because many of these places have bulk discounts and/or purchase culturally specific foods to support all families. We are headed into the holiday season. Many senior centers, public places, and schools will be closed. We are in a crisis and we have a wonderful community that is ready and willing to support each other, they just need leaders. Leaders that can help share information, strategies, and resources. We need to rise to this occasion and collaborate. Communication needs to be open and not paternalistic. Our most vulnerable are our most resilient and we need to know what they are doing so we can support them and modify our system to help all families "We need to make sure any funding that goes out is accessible for smaller groups and orgs. Many already do incredible work and are trusted. There are groups that provide culturally specific foods like Feed’em Freedom Foundation. There is the Jewish Family & Child Service (JFCS). They know what they are doing, and we need to support their work and listen to what their needs are." "Also we are in a time where many immigrants and refugees are not leaving their homes out of fear. We have LGBTQI2S+ people staying home due to fear because of the policies by this federal regime; we need to center access to our solutions. We have disabled individuals who aren’t leaving home, we need to support delivery services that people trust to get them food as well. I say this because we need to be bold and broad with our support. We as the County do some things well, but there are others who also do things well. We don’t need to duplicate, we need to bolster. We need to make sure that they also get funding."

I am looking to do what I can to bolster the systems in our county and region to ensure that Multnomah County residents are fed. The specific systems I am looking at include: advocating for funding to the Oregon Hunger Response Fund (OAR 461.192); allocating local funds to the Oregon Food Bank and/or the Partners for a Hunger-Free Oregon to distribute to smaller organizations and pantries; and, in the long term, find solutions that support our County’s farmers, community gardens, and local markets to better address pervasive and consistent food insecurity in our community.

Today, The County Commission will discuss some of my proposals. The last few months have been disheartening. Every day, we learn about another program that has been gutted, cut, or a funding stream no longer exists. My office has not been standing by. We've been determined to find solutions. #MultCo
In April, I shared my SHS reform proposal with Metro and my county colleagues and have continued working with them and our county partners to bring forward reforms to ensure that this critical funding is doing what voters intended it to do. The goal is to leverage existing programs, partner with other agencies, and collaborate with other local leaders to reshape and strengthen our safety net. I have proposed reforms to our homeless services work to: Problem: Lack of access to housing placement at many shelters. Solution: Bring greater equity and flexibility to our shelter system by transitioning site based case management to a mobile model that has proven successful for years. This can improve flow through our system and ensure that no matter what shelter someone accesses, they have a worker who can connect them with services while they are on their housing journey Problem: We need to save money but meet goals Solution: Creating intentional programming to utilize a long standing practice of hotel and motel sheltering to support our efforts to meet the Community Sheltering Strategy goals at a lower cost than our other shelter models. Problem: Lack of investments from federal level means strained local dollars Solution: Work with the City of Portland and Home Forward to find opportunities to get families, who we know are or will lose housing due to changes in federal funding, into affordable housing vacancies.

I wanted to pen my own response to ICE and the federal government's continued aggression towards Portland. My people do not have the privilege to keep our heads down to not be attacked. We are already under attack. #MultnomahCounty #D2 #resist #NoICE

Make no mistake: this isn’t just about Portland or whatever city the Trump administration targets next. This is what authoritarian regimes do to silence opposition and erode freedom. Instead of unlawfully occupying our streets under false pretenses, the federal government could choose to help address our need to build more housing so people can afford to live in this community, repair roads and bridges, and restore funding for food, healthcare, and housing so our neighbors can meet their basic human needs. We reject this effort to sow fear, silence opposition, and turn the cities we love into places where people feel afraid. These actions are all part of a continued effort by the president to rule through fear and intimidation and expand his power by any means necessary. These bullying tactics don't work, and we will stand up for our community and oppose this military takeover.

Yesterday, ICE reportedly took two community members in North Portland. One who was on their way to work and another who was with their 13-year-old child outside of a school. The kidnapping of our neighbors is unacceptable and abhorrent. My heart goes out to their family members.
