It was inspiring to hear the difference Portland Street Response is making in the lives of those most vulnerable in our city at the East Portland PSR Town Hall. In the short period since PSR has scaled up their programs, more Portlanders are receiving the right responder at the right time.

I want to be clear about what the detention impact fee proposal, introduced by Councilors Morillo and Green, is designed to do. This isn’t a revenue tool — it’s a deterrence tool.

One of my biggest priorities in office is increasing voter engagement in East Portland, and it was good to hear some feedback from the community at the D1 voters’ listening session hosted by the City Elections Office and League of Women Voters at Midland Library.

Thank you to @pdx-fss.bsky.social for organizing Sunday’s remembrance, and to everyone who came out to show solidarity on a cold, soggy morning. East Portland deserves safe streets. I’m committed to doing everything I can to #endtrafficviolence.

We heard from families who have lost loved ones and also survivors of road traffic violence. Their broader message was that it’s not enough to just remember those we’ve lost – we have a responsibility to take action and prevent more deaths.

On Sunday, I joined local leaders and Portlanders at Luuwit View Park to observe the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims. It was important that we gathered in East Portland because our neighbors disproportionately bear the deadly consequences of traffic violence.

Team Avalos is hiring for an Operations Coordinator who believes that strong internal systems make it possible for communities to win lasting change and is ready to build the structures that help us govern effectively and sustainably.

Renters: I want to hear from you! At our next Homelessness and Housing Committee meeting on Tuesday, November 18, we’re holding open public testimony so renters can speak directly to councilors about their experiences and what they’d like to see from the City.

If we’re meeting our community on the streets with direct resources and a place for them to go that fits their need – what they ACTUALLY need – I’m all for that. But that’s not what’s happening when people are swept.

Judge Immergut made it clear in her ruling: the Trump administration's claims about Portland are untethered from the facts. If you look at people in frog and chicken costumes and consider that a war zone, I think you need to get your glasses checked.

In October, the Homelessness and Housing Committee heard testimony from Portlanders who implored the City to not neglect investments in housing placement, permanent housing, and eviction prevention.

At the Power of Place Roadshow we watched a screening of two award-winning short films at the intersection of place and identity. I highly recommend you check them out!

Pedestrian safety, walkability, food access, and active collaboration with the community and neighborhood associations were other main themes of discussion at the Gateway Town Hall. See a full list of notes linked in my newsletter.

In October we passed an update to our Urban Forest Plan – a guiding document for how the City equitably preserves, plants, and cares for trees so that future generations can benefit from this essential green infrastructure. Help contribute to our tree canopy by picking up some free trees!

If you’re confused about the court cases around Trump’s unlawful deployment of the National Guard, you’re not alone! It’s been a whirlwind of dueling cases over the past month, and all the legalese doesn’t make things easier.

In October, City Council stood united against federal overreach and militarization and passed the Protect Portland Initiative resolution and Sanctuary City Codification unanimously.

Even though the Trump administration says they will partially fund SNAP this month, we still don’t know when Oregonians will get their benefits. But we do know that our community is stepping up in a big way to keep our neighbors from going hungry. 🧵
November 5, 2025 at 10:56 PM
When the federal government is refusing to even feed the hungry, it’s our local community that’s stepping up. One East Portlander who’s really risen to the occasion is Don, the owner-operator of the Parkrose Grocery Outlet.

Over the past few days, I’ve been trying to wrap my head around losing my car, having my home burned, and watching my neighbors go through the same nightmare.

East County is being hit hard by the increased ICE detainments and raids, but we’re also seeing our community keep families together through the rapid response network.
