We are urging the appeals court to hold Border Patrol agents accountable. Under our Constitution, officers must have reasonable suspicion or probable cause to stop or arrest people — and we are urging the court to uphold these essential protections. #orpol

We are urging the court to uphold those essential protections, consistent with our ongoing work in Oregon to ensure federal agencies respect the rights of everyone in our communities.” In California, in the case United Farm Workers v. Noem, a district court ordered Border Patrol agents to not stop people without reasonable suspicion or make arrests without a warrant, and to document all stops and arrests. The federal government appealed. We are urging the court to uphold the injunction and hold federal agents accountable — because unlawful stops and arrests do not keep our communities safe.

We just secured a settlement preventing further delays in medical and public health research: the Trump administration has agreed to stop delays in reviewing National Institute of Health (NIH) grant applications. #orpol

That meant delayed decisions on studies focused on disease prevention, treatments, and public health challenges that affect patients and families. This agreement restarts a system that’s supposed to be based on scientific merit, not political interference, and lets Oregon researchers get back to the work they were doing for our communities.”

Big news: Last week, a federal judge ruled in our favor and blocked new, illegal terms on FEMA grants – which means states can use the money for emergency management and homeland security to keep our communities safe, as it was intended.

AG Rayfield protects emergency & homeland security funding, helping keep Oregon communities safe “These grants support the people Oregonians count on when something goes wrong – firefighters, emergency managers, first responders, and law enforcement already out there doing work. Putting unlawful conditions on that funding puts a real strain on systems that are supposed to be there at a moment’s notice. This order keeps Oregonians safe and makes sure the people who protect our communities have the support they need to do their jobs.” Federal judge blocks Trump administration from adding illegal terms to FEMA grants, protecting emergency funding for states. The Emergency Management Performance Grant (EMPG) and Homeland Security Grant Program (HSGP) fund the backbone of Oregon’s emergency management system, as well as critical safety work like terrorism prevention training and emergency response exercises. Without this funding, the Oregon Dept. of Emergency Management estimates that 2/3 of Oregon’s counties could lose significant capacity to perform basic emergency management functions.

Remember: Government agencies and reputable companies will never demand payment via gift cards. Requests for immediate action or secrecy are red flags. Tips to avoid gift card fraud: check packaging seals, verify PIN coverage, use official sites for balance checks, and never pay debts or prizes with gift cards.

We’re collaborating with a bipartisan group of 14 attorneys general and the Gift Card Fraud Prevention Alliance to protect consumers from the growing threat of gift card scams.

Big news – we won our lawsuit protecting mental health programs in schools.

In the wake of deadly school shootings, Congress allocated $1 billion to bring mental health professionals to schools. This win means the U.S. Dept. of Education cannot unlawfully cancel these grants.

In a win this week, a judge ruled that the Coast Guard rescue helicopter in Newport must stay where it is.

We’ll continue to protect Oregon communities from decisions that create deadly consequences.

Relocating the helicopter would have increased response times and put lives at risk. This preserves a critical public safety tool while the case moves forward, and it reflects our commitment to protecting Oregon communities from decisions that create deadly consequences.” This week, a judge ruled in our favor in our lawsuit to keep the Coast Guard rescue helicopter in Newport, issuing a preliminary injunction requiring the federal government to keep the helicopter where it is. This is a win for safety in Newport and the surrounding coastal community.

AG Rayfield leads lawsuit challenging federal attack on gender-affirming care “By targeting Oregon providers, HHS is putting care at risk and forcing families to choose between their personal health care choices and their doctor’s ability to practice. Healthcare decisions belong with families and their healthcare providers, not the government.” AG Rayfield is leading a coalition of states in suing to ensure HHS cannot simply use a “declaration” to circumvent basic legal requirements for policy changes. The coalition argues that HHS is taking this unlawful action to intimidate providers, and that it will create fear and uncertainty for transgender youth and their families - and reduce access to care, worsen provider shortages, and harm Medicaid patients far beyond those seeking gender-affirming care. In Oregon, gender-affirming care is protected under HB 2002, passed in 2023, which requires health insurance to cover medically necessary treatments, protects both patients and providers from out-of-state legal challenges, and ensures coverage for procedures including surgeries, hormone therapy, and revisions to prior treatments. This law makes clear that Oregon is a place where families can make their own health care decisions, and the state will defend their right to do so.

Today, the United States Supreme Court denied the federal government’s request to stay a lower court ruling blocking the Trump Administration’s unlawful federalization of the Illinois National Guard.

At our recent town hall, many of the comments & questions were heavy – so many are struggling to feel safe & make ends meet. Yet some visitors made the evening brighter: Portland’s Frog Brigade.

After disasters – like the flooding hitting many parts of the Pacific Northwest – scammers can step in and try to exploit people who want to help.

Be skeptical of anyone promising immediate clean-up. Some may quote outrageous prices or demand payment upfront. Research contractors. Before working with a contractor, visit ccb.state.or.us/search to verify their license and check references. Do not trust promises not in writing. Never pay by wire transfer, gift card, cash, or signing over an insurance check. Never make the final payment until the work is done and you are satisfied. Do not give in to pressure. If you feel pressure from your insurance company to settle, call the Oregon Division of Financial Regulation at 888-877-4894 or visit dfr.oregon.gov. Guard your personal information. Only scammers will say they are a government official and then demand money or your credit card, bank account, or Social Security number. Remember federal and state agencies do not charge application fees for assistance programs. Look out for rental-listing scams. Steer clear of people who tell you to wire money or ask for security deposits or rent before you’ve met or signed a lease. Do your research. Use a site like GuideStar.org or CharityNavigater.org to find a charity. Only give to registered charities. Check the Oregon DOJ’s charity database. Resist high-pressure appeals. Never respond to requests to purchase and send gift cards. Remember that not all gifts are tax-deductible. Only gifts to charities that have IRS 501(c)(3) status are tax deductible. Gifts to individuals through GoFundMe and similar platforms are not tax deductible.

AG Rayfield blocks HUD policy that would force more people into homelessness “Our focus should be on getting people housed and keeping them there - not sending families and providers scrambling to figure out where someone will sleep next. HUD’s changes would have pushed us backwards by putting existing housing at risk. This ruling keeps us moving in the right direction.” Today, a federal judge ordered the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to preliminarily stop changes to its Continuum of Care grant program — the largest resource for federal homelessness assistance funding — after our multistate coalition argued in court that the changes were illegal and would leave tens of thousands of people around the country without a place to live. Oregon relies on eight Continuum of Care coalitions across the state, which together received more than $65 million in HUD funding last year, most of it for permanent housing programs that kept thousands of Oregonians stably housed. HUD’s new policy would slash that support by up to 70% and put people at real risk of returning to homelessness - but today’s court order stops that from happening while the case proceeds.
