Epic Games sent a DMCA notice to my online stores for my geology-themed design involving a crossed pickaxe and rock hammer that said "PICKS...or it didn't happen" because they asserted that Epic owned all rights to artwork/mention of pickaxes, right before an SVP annual conference. Eric cost me $$$

Once again, my pledge to you, faithful voters - when I become all powerful ruler of the BBC, I WILL prune the Strictly results show to fifteen minutes. In, dance, done. If you're wondering what I'm planning to do with the half hour space that opens up in the schedules, I have one word. Cartoons.

One of the best worldbuilding guides you can read is Tolkien's notes on translation, where he talks about the fact that *everything* you write is in practice being translated into English; is is no more anachronistic to use the word "September" than it is use the word "sword" or "house" or "hello".
Not sure how I feel when a book tells me that instead of "12 months" they have "10 arcs," which are each 40 days long, and they all have names like Blossomarc, Flamearc Snowarc,.... I appreciate the world building, but couldnt we have just kept the calendar the same?

For the past six weeks, an AI Facebook account has been pulling my history posts on Instagram and slopping out new captions, so I’ve been feeding it poison pills and its followers are having meltdowns in the comments. It’s been pretty spectacular.

The X-Files is genuinely a timelessly good show, because when not focusing on overarching conspiracy plot, they would really just focus on a single concept and quite crucially, it would cast an incredible actor to center the episode around who would be utterly god damn captivating to watch.

Yes Madam's opening 5-10 minutes is a better action movie than 95% of action movies you've ever seen in your entire life.
Think I'm gonna rewatch Yes Madam tonight, classic Hong Kong action comedy directed by Corey Yuen starring Michelle Yeoh and Cynthia Rothrock

JK Rowling got a full *decade* of press as a martyr for being "cancelled" (declared passe by people online) and meanwhile nobody considers it very interesting that a prominent left wing author is basically banned from entering or publishing in the United Kingdom for her politics
so this is like, one of the biggest free speech infringements by a western democracy in our lifetimes right?

As a consequence of this thread, I've learned Orson Welles felt so bad about people assuming Susan Alexander from Citizen Kane was based on Marion Davies, and the subsequent effect on her reputation, he wrote a foreword for Davies' memoir of her life with Hearst stressing that she wasn't.
Since we are once again dealing with "the only silent era comedians of note were men" I feel I need to stand up for the ladies.

Marion Davies!

it’s so painful to watch good old movies where people took their jobs seriously (and were given the time (?) to do so) and modern stuff where everything is surface-level amateur crap

i know some shitty modern movies are due to the funding environment but MAVERICK did not have that problem
