This is extremely why we should be preventing people like Gavin Newsom from having any national political clout, because in the US transphobia is seen as a right wing ideology and letting it infect the other side is a one way ticket to bipartisan approval of institutionalizing us all
for sure, the right have always been doing transphobia but they were objectively losing ground bit by bit.
It took otherwise left wing people letting their ideas in, helping them spread & giving them credibility for transphobia to become what it is today.

I agree with this to some extent however I will note that there is an argument to be had that the right has been infiltrating these spaces and laundering their ideology as ‘left wing’ in order to gain broad appeal hence the reason terfs are so closely connected with far-right organisations.

I think my fave example of the BBC as a whole being kinda fucked is that one summer when like four different BBC staff compared trans healthcare to nazi torture which may have also been the same year a certain comedy writer went on Newsnight and did the same.

the thing is that it isn't just News. Sure, a lot of it is News and News is our main touchpoint as the audience with the problem - but look at how the BBC responded to criticisms on that "trans women are rapists probably" article they did.
