I kinda feel like I need to preface any post that isn’t outraged at the state of the world with: “Listen, things are really, really bad. Probably worse than we know. But dammit, if I can’t also have this other fun or unserious or unrelated-to-current-crisis tanget, I don’t think we’re gonna make it”

This is totally predictable, and unfortunately while if I was in charge I'd be planning a tunnel and a high quality integrated GO-subway interchange here, the powers that be at literally every level of gov are. . . not.

Extraordinarily wack that these tech zillionaires are not funding modern Carnegie Libraries all over the Bay Area.

Every museum, school, hospital, and library within 100 miles of the intersection of Sand Hill Road and El Camino Real should have a brand new wing named for one of these dudes.

Someone has sure already made this observation but the fact they can convert all those empty warehouses into prison camps means they could have converted them into housing, community centers, job training centers or, hell, libraries or schools all along. It’s always a matter of will not resources.

Even better: The Continuous Sidewalk.

Instead of forcing people to step down into the street, we make the cars step up into the pedestrian space. It prioritizes the person walking or rolling, keeps the path level for accessibility, and physically forces drivers to slow down.

Even if Dario Amodei is telling the truth about Anthropic’s “50% gross margins” (40% is what’s reported but he said it on an interview) on API calls, Anthropic is in this case selling $295.47 ($591.30 in tokens) API calls for $100. I have seen as high as $935 (so $467.50) on the $100 plan.

I’ll say it again. There IS such a thing as “vertical sprawl.” It’s not tall buildings. It’s tall buildings IN CAR-DEPENDENT SPRAWL.

If you do tall buildings in walkable, multi-modal urbanism, then it’s VERTICAL URBANISM, not vertical sprawl.

Suggesting otherwise means you don’t understand sprawl.
Lmao oh here we go. Not vertical sprawl!!!

In the Toronto Star I write about Toronto Police's violent corruption scandal. Will it move the needle on police reform? It's a dramatic escalation in a long history of police intimidation, bullying their critics & broken trust. I argue 3 big things have to happen, including firing this chief.
Shawn Micallef: Toronto is facing its worst police corruption scandal in decades. Here are three things that need to happen soon
The corruption revealed by Project South undermines the public trust that is the foundation of policing.
