either you believe everyone deserves housing, healthcare and basic human dignity or you don't. being a veteran of US imperialist wars doesn't make you more deserving of that stuff than anyone else. my roommate has been homeless in the past is she less deserving because she didn't kill iraqi babies?
What's wrong with putting veterans first? Most of them were working class kids with fuck all opportunities, got shot at and indoctrinated to shoot at others then left on the shit-pile.

I think a big part is just, some people mean “this isn’t what I want America to be”, not “this isn’t what America has been”. Those words can mean either, and perhaps we can distinguish between them by assuming others using the words differently are coming from a different linguistic tradition.
