Moving into our second night of continuous live coverage from and for Tumbler Ridge and Canada.

It is times like these that you most feel responsibility that comes with being part of a public broadcaster. I am proud to be able to contribute to this sort of service

It's enraging to understand the amount of thought, time, craft, and care that every writer and artist I know puts into their work only to see these GenAI proselytizers have the gall to take that work, shove it into a blender, and then demand we enthusiastically support them and the resulting slop.

Absolutely awful news from Tumbler Ridge. I hope everyone in the community has all the support they need, not just tonight, but for all the difficult days to come... 💔

Tumbler Ridge is a small planned resource community, a winding 90 minute drive from the nearest city of at least 10,000 people.

A massive number of people are going to descend there tomorrow.

May those that arrive have respect and grace for the unimaginable grief.

Context: this speech is from SIR THOMAS MORE, a history written, as near as scholars can tell, in the early 1600s by 6 or 7 people including Dekker, Heywood, Chettle, Shakespeare, and Munday.

It was never performed, because Jacobean England was a police state and it was banned by the censor.
Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again.

The Pitt got greenlit for a season 3, out next February, and the announcement has very funny comment from HBO chairman Casey Bloys that’s like “yeah, turns out if you just make a TV show like how we used to make TV shows you can have a 15+ episode season every year 🤷‍♂️”

Transphobia is a cancer of the heart and mind.

It is a useless fear, based on ignorance and cruelty.

Trans people are not responsible for a single one of the problems we face.

Do the world a favor and grow the fuck up.

Many good tips in this thread for people not accustomed to the kind of cold weather + power outages that we in the northeast expect and prep for. If you're in southern states... read and take heed.
Hi, for those of you unfamiliar with this sort of weather

-if the power goes out, trying to heat your home with the clay pot + candle method is not a great idea, try personal warmth (ie blankets) and blocking and sealing drafty areas instead if you can
Widespread freezing rain and sleet are expected south of the primary snow axis. Significant and damaging ice accumulations are likely, with the potential for long-duration power outages, tree damage, and dangerous travel conditions.

No-strings-attached, zero-means-testing, no-questions-asked cash payouts have been proven, over and over again, to be the most effective form of charity/aid going.

It gets people in housing, and it saves the state money. We know this. It's fact, not theory.
An Oregon pilot program giving cash to homeless youths sees a staggering reduction in homelessness. The program gave participants $1,000 cash payments each month for two years, and at the end of the project's first phase, 91% of participants reported being in stable housing.

This. This. This. Food banks generally have buying power and partnerships where your money actually buys more food and feeds more people if they’re the ones doing the purchasing.
please give money and not food, it takes a not insignificant amount of time to sort and stock donations and money goes very far. also make sure you donate to a place that treats people with dignity and respect and allows access to anyone

as we reach the SNAP cliff just a gentle reminder to do-gooders that the most efficient use of resources is to contribute to organizations that are already established. unless nothing exists in your area (and it likely does whether you know it) now is probably not the time to stand something up
