Went for a hike today up Old Grouse Mountain Highway to the base of the ski area. These are the conditions at the bottom of the Olympic Express Quad Chair, which stopped spinning a few days ago. They are also harvesting snow on the road. @ensembleator.bsky.social @yvrwxwatcher.bsky.social

Vancouver and the lower mainland in an unstable southwesterly flow… Expect scattered showers at times heavy. If you’re near the mountains, a rumble of thunder not out of the question. Things should ease this evening.

While a dusting of snow may be visible on our North Shore Mtns today, don’t get too excited as SW’ly flow will allow freezing level to rise over the coming days. Unfortunately, it looks like North Shore ski hills will mainly see rain in the days ahead! 😞

If you can get away from the light over the next hour or two Vancouver, there is a possibility of still seeing the northern lights this evening. My current view in the Pitt Meadows area.

Bz keeps pushing south now… if you’re out of the fog, now it’s your chance to possibly start seeing Aurora around Southwest BC especially with a camera.

Of course Bz jumped to betw/ +45 and +55 literally minutes after I posted this and it continues to be positive. Unfortunately with other factors trending down, it now looks less likely that we will see Aurora across the Lower Mainland but there is still a chance. We will see.. :(
Oh man… can it be dark already?? Five hours for us in SW BC until it’s dark enough but the stage looks set (barring something stupid) for a great show tonight!

If you can get above the fog tonight, it is looking increasingly likely that Aurora Borealis will be visible to the naked eye across SW BC… Stay tuned!

While it is mid-January; Vancouver already showing signs of spring with cherry blossoms beginning to pop, yellow male catkins of red aspen trees getting ready to pollinate, and the sun having a touch of warmth (in those places that saw it)

Fog lurks as the north side of Metro Vancouver and Burrard Inlet is in the clear with sunny skies… freezing levels well above the local mountains.

Many other areas not breaking out of the murk.
