Bari’s complaint was “there’s nothing new here” and while that’s untrue it’s also irrelevant

“we intentionally sent people to be tortured in a hellhole and bragged about it and The Hague is too good for everyone involved” is a story that simply cannot be told enough

This year, we've put together a series of book lists featuring works by Clarion West alumni and instructors that may speak to some part of what we need right now. Today we highlight the dystopia of it all.

"AI is here to stay" is such a funny mantra for the boosters to keep chanting at us. Forever chemicals are also here to stay. That's actually one of the main reasons why they're bad.

Finished reading Unity by @ellybangs.bsky.social last night, and I absolutely adored it. If you enjoy hiveminds and mind melding in a fucked up apocalyptic future, I highly recommend it. Easily one of my favorite books I've read this year.

I would go way further. Everything I ever wrote -- every last thing -- is a failure to execute an idea that was never half as good as what I ended up with. Ideas are cheap. Their only value is to set the process in motion. (1/n)
So many times, the entire nature of what I'm working on has changed because of things I've discovered during the "tedious" work that they claim AI will save me from. It's in fact extremely common that I don't know what a thing really is until I start trying to do the hard stuff and then I find out
Also just tapping the sign again — A.I. eliminates the opportunity for creative discovery on your way to the destination you *thought* you wanted. You’re making art, process is everything.

again and again we say this, but it's worth noticing every time. literally ANY other president, and this would be a top headline story for months. The fact that our media has made the conscious decision to shrug at open corruption is one of the prime reasons we are where we are.
We now learn that Fifa had a very specific "ask" in exchange for its "Peace Award" to Trump, with loads of gold trinkets, and that was dismissal of a criminal corruption case against senior Fifa officials. And Trump granted it. Another corrupt bargain, barely noticed (and ignored by US media).

Apropos of nothing, you know what I love? The map-tapping scene in The Two Towers. All those zoom-in shots of fingers roaming over the map -- and then tapping it. Tap some places once. Tap others twice. I don't know why but I can't get enough of it.

One of the reasons the Republicans are pushing so hard to kill ACA *while* making half of all their attacks on it focused on trans people, is that they're convinced the average American hates healthy trans kids more than they love their own sick cis kids.

The morning after the 2016 election a huge and vibrant rainbow hung over the city -- like a taunt. Like a voice in the sky clearing its throat and muttering "you may recall I've got a proven fix for a world turned wicked and corrupt but you all made me promise not to do it."

It's hard to explain to normies how much effort Trump is putting into anti-trans policies.

This is like the 12th thing just this week. And there were 12 things the week before, and 12 things the week before that. There will be 12 things next week.

This is almost everything the government is doing.

Maybe there is no true continuity of self. Maybe every time I sleep I die, and somebody else inherits my flesh and memory upon waking. But the more I consider this, the less bleak it seems. Yesterelly baked me cookies, and I gift groceries to my successor. The legacy is passed on.
