hyperbole is dead. the idiots stole it from us and kicked it to death. now the best way to emphasize something is by being very reasonable and measured

VOLITION - Subdue the regret. Dust yourself off, proceed. You'll get it in the next life, where you don't make mistakes. Do what you can with this one, while you're alive.

i'm still holding out hope for the pendulum backswing from big visibility politicsposting. i'm so tired of being moralized to abt needing to see the details of the various horrors. yes it's bad. yes i know. i've seen it 50 times already today. what can you post about that is actually personal to you

man he's good. this also works as a reminder of what fuckin freaks normal politicians are. it's not that hard to smile and riff off something like this but how often do you see it happen
Child at the podium: “A woo woo woo.”

Mamdani: That’s how I felt when we came up with this plan. Together, we will expand the idea of what is possible in our city—and what sounds and noises we can make at a press conference.

in a recent battlebots season there was one competitor that was 100% self-driving and it felt - to a surprising degree - like a strong, fundamental betrayal of the spirit of the sport. even though the entire point is we're here to watch robots fight. good news though, that bot lost every match hard
people who say that all creative endeavor can be replaced with AI probably need to reckon with the fact that all televised sports events with human athletes could easily be replicated by high-definition computer-animated simulations….and yet we don’t do this and no one seems to want to.

The reason I think this is bad (and I have heard many authors say this in various forms privately) is that you start chasing shadows. Imagining someone's going to be furious, when most people are just curious, and their most likely reaction is not love or hatred, but indifference.

Btw, related to this, I've come to believe one of the worst things about social media is that it makes you believe the average person is a give-a-shit type of person. That thing that matters a lot to you and everyone you know here? Most people would hear you reference it and think "huh."
Like if you're on bluesky, you're very likely not normal. You're someone who was on twitter (already not most people) and then decided to change platforms due to some opinion about how it was run. So you're a highly engaged, atypical person.

Just hire all the laid off reporters. Call it the Washington Citizen or something. Doesn’t seem that hard.
Before The Washington Post layoffs came down, a group of wealthy D.C. locals approached CEO Will Lewis with a proposal.

@passantino.bsky.social has the details in his Saturday @status.news column: www.status.news/p/washington...

Scotland has passed a law that all new buildings must install ‘swift bricks’ which are hollowed out bricks to help nesting swifts and other endangered birds! Swifts are especially endangered because so many chimneys now have chimney caps. Swifts return to the same nesting spot year after year.

you probably already know that blurring doesn't destroy information. but did you know that blurring + jpeg compression produces cool glitch art
It's all a blur
If you follow information security discussions on the internet, you might have heard that blurring an image is not a good way of redacting its contents.
