I had not previously heard this story (about “Full Moon Fever”), but I find it striking that the article doesn’t mention what I now realize was a “fuck you” in the title track of Petty’s next album, “Into the Great Wide Open” (in next post):
This Legendary Rock Album Was Initially Rejected By the Label, Despite Its Qualities, Author Reveals: 'We Don't Hear Any Singles'
'A lot of the major record companies are consolidating and there were a lot of 'regime changes.'

This is a hell of a read, with the most remarkable aspect of it being that they asked eighty artists to name their favourite Neil Young song, and got fifty different answers (fifty-two if you count different versions of the same song as different answers). How many artists would elicit that many?

Happy 80th birthday, Neil Young!

it's a hell of an act -- what do you call it
The attorney general and the FBI director, a manosphere podcaster bro, pulled into the situation room a member of Congress best known for getting kicked out of a Beetlejuice musical for drunkenly giving her date a handy, in order to pressure her about the president's child sex trafficking scandal.

This article is, as you'd expect, mostly infuriating, but this, in the midst of him trumpeting his Canadian bona fides, did make me smile:

"Gretzky said he told Trudeau that Canada should make the U.S. the 12th province on the call, seemingly forgetting that there are only 10 provinces currently."
Gretzky opens up about backlash from Canada after supporting Trump | Sports
Wayne Gretzky has opened up about the backlash he's received over the past year from Canadians due to his connections to Donald Trump.

I also don’t remember hearing the phrase “Trump is managing the government.”

I've been lukewarm on Abughazaleh, who has...not always impressed me as possessing a maturity beyond her years (she's three years younger than AOC was when elected, and AOC was an uncommonly impressive 29 year-old), but, as I watch Democrats fail basic tests of political courage...fuck, elect her.
I just walked out of federal court where I pleaded NOT GUILTY to the charges against me.

I will continue to stand up to authoritarianism and call this out for what it is: a political prosecution.

When you tell the ringleader of the pedophile conspiracy that, fine, you’ll see him but you don’t want to run into Donald Trump …

Weirdly, these e-mails simultaneously i. corroborate much of what Michael Wolff's been claiming, and ii. validate my perception that Michael Wolff is not a serious, credible journalist.

I assume it’s a typo, but him calling him “donad”—presumably rhymes with “gonad”—is kind of fun.
Jeffrey Epstein: "Have them ask my houseman about donald [Trump] almost walking through the door leaving his nose print on the glass as young women were swimming in the pool and he was so focused he walked straight into the door."

“It’s interesting that the Democrats are releasing this compelling evidence of the President’s sex crimes for nakedly partisan reasons.”
BLITZER: Do you think the Epstein files should be released?

STUTZMAN: I think James Comer has done a very good job handling them methodically. It's interesting that they release those files today on the day the govt shutdown is going to end and it's a positive for Republicans

The meltdown *will* be glorious, for about five minutes until a bloc of Democratic “moderates” agrees to just legislate the tariffs.

Other people are pointing out that she’s wrong, which she is, but worth noting that she’s also a sociopath.
I think the belief by the powerful that "people will put up with many things if you are excellent at math" is incredibly revealing in terms of understanding How We Got Here

Trump might last five minutes. The flights he was controlling, not quite so much.
The President wouldn't last five minutes as an air traffic controller, and after everything they've been through - and the way this administration has treated them from Day One - he has no business shitting on them now.

Well, I guess it’s the next best thing after calling the team itself a racial slur?
The billionaire owner of the Washington Commanders might name his new stadium after a man who just got mercilessly booed by his entire fan base because they despise him. Seems like a brilliant branding strategy.

I’m trying really hard to adjust for the facts that i. I have terrible political instincts, and ii. I get most of my analysis on U.S. politics from the admittedly very echo-chambery Bluesky, and I still can’t get anywhere on this re-opening deal except “what in the everloving fuck?”.

It's kind of remarkable how appealing they think Islam will be to Americans once they're more exposed to it.
Tuberville: “We just saw what happened in NY. We lost NY. It will be completely Muslim in 3-4 years. That’s what they want. And it’s going to spread throughout the country.”

I know some intuitively obvious things turn out to be false, so I’m all for hypothesis testing, but it still kind of blows my mind that “social norms affect behaviour” is a statement that requires citations.
