Lazy artist, with a love for snowboarding and mountain biking. Utterly horrified by our current human world. In order to change the world we have to change humans. What we value, how we value it, how we speak, how we think. From Chimp to Bonobo.

More than ten years ago, I started my "Hannah Arendt" drawings series in my artwork. I lamented that the (Western) world needed thinkers like her desperately but did not have them.

Today, I stand corrected.

Too many people underestimate how evil Google is and how impactful its evil is. Yeah, the company that struck down its "don't be evil" maxim a while ago, because I guess it felt too constraining.
At Google, speech critical of ICE is censored from the company's internal platform, employees who speak out are served with warnings, and leadership refuses to acknowledge a petition that's now gotten 1,200 employee signatures.

Inside the worker-led push to get ICE out of Google:
Google is stifling anti-ICE speech in the workplace as 1,200 employees call on the company to cut ties
The search giant has made it harder and riskier to protest its policies. Workers are still fighting back. Plus: A community takes down a data center, QuitGPT, and the 5 worst Super Bowl AI ads.

This is more funny than the author knows because ”to be out and biking” is a Swedish idiom meaning that you’ve totally misunderstood something.

Apart from the catchy headline, many very good points in the text by Stephen M. Walt. Worth your while.

To have a voice means not just the animal capacity to utter sounds but the ability to participate fully in the conversations that shape your society, your relations to others, and your own life. There are three key things that matter in having a voice: audibility, credibility, and consequence.
Breaking the Silencing Machine
In many ways this society has moved toward a democracy of voices, as people who for their race or gender were shut out of systems of power and possibility – out of jury duty, professions, institutions...

It is payable through taxes. Taxes on the wealthy, on assets, and getting the money back that the wealthy keep out of the economy in taxhavens. Make datamining a cost that the software company pays out to the individual generating the data. Combine it with complementary local currenbcies.
Two Canadian economists say UBI is unavoidable.

"Assuming that [AI] will wreak havoc on opportunities for people to support themselves through full-time employment, the right to income will need to be divorced from returns to wage labour to avoid immiserating those without adequate capital."

As a historian of those movements, let me just say: SO FUCKING MUCH.
The successful nonviolence and civil rights movements of the past, as I’ve gathered from reading about them, ALSO featured a shit ton of incessant petty drama and in-fighting.

But crucially, they didn’t have social media - so this was kept far more private.

And there were bloody footprints
Where mercy should have stood
And two dead left to die on snow-filled streets
Alex Pretti and Renee Good...

Their claim was self defense, sir
Just don’t believe your eyes
It’s our blood and bones
And these whistles and phones
Against Miller and Noem’s dirty lies.
I wrote this song on Saturday, recorded it yesterday and released it to you today in response to the state terror being visited on the city of Minneapolis. It’s dedicated to the people of Minneapolis, our innocent immigrant neighbors and in memory of Alex Pretti and Renee Good.
