“Researchers found that participating families reported less economic hardship, reduced food insecurity, higher savings & improved well-being by the end of the pilot program. Parents had more time for their kids because they worked less OT, and they noticed improvements in school.“
The results are in, and the City's guaranteed basic income pilot was a success! Just $500 a month lowered food insecurity, improved outcomes for children, and raised credit scores.

We live in wealthiest country on Earth. There's no excuse for poverty.

There's a reason Alaska's oil dividend is revered as good policy: it recognizes that natural resources are common wealth that don't just belong to a corporation, government, or individual.

Meanwhile, Canada is losing 80% of our mineral wealth (~$1T) to private extraction.

New research co-authored by Pohler found that a modest tax benefit in Canada – similar to the U.S. Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) – encouraged low-income workers to stay employed.

“Low-income workers are more likely to stay employed if they receive an unanticipated cash transfer, rather than leave the labor market, as most people worry they will,” said Dionne Pohler, the David and Alexandra Lipsky Professor in Dispute Resolution and Labor Relations at #CornellILR.

A small, unexpected tax benefit helped low-income Canadians continue working, contrary to what classic economic theory would predict.

The utmost BIGGEST brainworm we need to get rid of is that people will immediately stop taking care of society the moment their needs are met

Every single test with things like fi UBI shows that when folks do not need to worry about the next meal, they become active members of society

The rudiments of UBI. Excellent.

The work that’s done in the home is far more important than what finance assholes like me do.

It’s small, but it warms the heart a little.

People on both sides of the political spectrum can get behind this idea: we shouldn't tax income from hard work more than income from no work.

It would change life entirely and offer freedom that is out of reach. Essential healthcare and housing could be obtained without worrying about having to rely on anyone or anything else. There's much to be said for being able to live in the way that you need to in order to be fulfilled as a person.
Honest question: If everyone got Universal Basic Income, no strings attached, what would YOU do with it?

Dude, give me UBI and I'll work any dang job you want. The thing that makes drudge jobs suck so very very much for me has never been the quality of the work but the fact that while I am working that full time plus job I am *still not making enough to live* so it's a drudge job+a precarious life.
Always grinds my gears when people say "No one would work drudge jobs if there was a UBI"

But even staying completely capitalist, I disagree. If I received a baseline living-wage UBI, and then I was offered REWARDS for drudge jobs, I'd take it! I want to save up for treats and travel and hobbies!

A healthy economy is money in motion. It benefits people when it’s moving, when it’s working, whether it’s funding research or buying hamburgers. Society thrives when the money circulates.

And even if a UBI recipient doesn’t earn an extra dime, the money still circulates.
