I don’t think people quite understand that the occupation by ICE in the Twin Cities has more or less erased non-white people from public life. They cannot safely exist in any space accessible to the public and moving between private places leaves folks vulnerable to kidnapping by armed masked goons.

Yesterday, a federal immigration judge ruled to deport UUP Upstate member Alcibiades “Alex” Lazaro Ramírez González. UUP will continue to stand by Alex and his family as we have since he was first detained in October.

A University at Buffalo researcher was detained by ICE after he made a wrong turn on the Peace Bridge.

UUP President Fred Kowal said, “this situation is frightening because it’s clear that there are no limits on what ICE can and will do.”

One of the giants of harpsichord performance in the 20th century. This write-up conveys vividly the darkness and trauma of her years interned in Nazi camps, and the ways music was made and learned in such unimaginable circumstances
Born #OTD 1927, Zuzana Růžičková began playing the piano age 9. During WWII, she was excluded from school. In Jan 1942, she and her family were interned in the Terezín, then deported to Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen. She survived and went on to study music.

Friends, Claudette Colvin—the 15-year-old who refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus in March 1955 & joined the federal case against bus segregation that went to the Supreme Court — died today at age 86. But there are lots of myths and mis-impressions about her. A short corrective thread:

Does anyone have a sense of how expensive the VISA for a UK-based academic to come to the US for, say, a week is that days?

I think I heard 1000 in the last year but I don't know

You might've heard that Mpls public schools went hybrid bc so many families are in hiding. Well, a coworker just told me that today, during his kid's hybrid class, a kid's apt building was raided onscreen

This is an act of self-harm to Canada. Especially coming at a time when the United States is destroying its own statistical capacity and reliable data has never been more needed.

It's another signal that this Liberal government sees no value in the work of government. Utter, utter foolishness.

FYI: Judge Ellis (Chicago ICE case) noted in November that video evidence shows ICE "brake-checked other motorists in an attempt to force accidents that agents could then use as justifications for deploying force."

right? I love the calmness of 'nope, you're not going crazy'. Those of us who are trying to protect another sense of what university is and does are told so very often that we're too unrealistic and too unversed in actual financial thinking that you end up internalising it. Good & clear reminder.

Useful and clear reframing of higher ed budget crisis discourse
Three short paragraphs, and you've got the whole mind-bending mess that is #UKHE finance & governance neatly laid out.

This is why it's all so exhausting: our managers declare there's only one static frame, while we know their framing is part of the issue.

rare to see an american politician speak in these terms and it rocks
“When I speak about making our city more affordable, my vision is not limited to the homes that we live in or the child care that we’re making universal — it’s also a vision where we make it possible for working people to afford lives of joy, of art, of rest, of expression.”

You used to see this kind of thing for scholars working in Myanmar, Turkmenistan, etc. This is how unfree US research is now.
