It is worth saying that putting “Africana studies” in scare quotes as if it’s a ridiculous concept is not a political argument. It’s just racism. “Africa is not worthy of a major” is the implication. Yeah dude you’re just racist. (From Gerard Baker at the WSJ today)

my husband brought up that especially at an AMS/SMT, we could really use tracks, which are Things at other conferences that help ensure that people can get to all the things they wanna get to. I'm guessing people don't want it because it would encourage some siloing but I'm like ehhh don't care

Finally looked up what transit there was from MSP to the AMS/SMT conference hotel and I genuinely love that the train runs all day and drops us off just 2 blocks from the hotel.

So I guess if we want to attend a fully online session at AMS but are attending in person, we have to pack along headphones and stand around in the hotel's common spaces with our devices and try and tune in? There are no rooms designated for online sessions to be streamed 🙄
