Music theory prof interested in too many things, and too many sports teams. Currently writing about Amy Beach, video game music, and lots of other fun stuff. Swim dad. Happiest in/on water.
My most dad-coded way of coping with this stuff is borrowing the hex wrenches from the band office and fixing wobbly chairs in my lecture hall. I can’t fix most things on campus but I can fix those.
Love when what promised to be a quiet Friday suddenly fills up with an extra department meeting and an emergency “what are you people thinking!?” meeting in the provost’s office

These Texans uniforms are *heinous*. Just the worst thing I've ever seen on a football field.

This but for research
new goal is to write music quickly enough that I'm not incredibly sick of it by the time I'm done with it

“MACtion Meat Raffle” is much more appealing than the time a few years back when Miami and Buffalo played on election night and dressed in solid red and solid blue to represent republicans and democrats. It was a good way to spoil that most beautiful thing in sports, the color-on-color game
MACtion Meat Raffle is a phrase I didn’t know I needed until now.

honestly, it does my 90s-kid heart good to know that people (or AIs?) *still* can’t write gamers, hackers, or just about anything related to tech in even a vaguely plausible or authentic way
just saw the worst gaming ad ive ever seen

HARVARD SURVIVES 45-43 ON A LAST SECOND FIELD GOAL
Harvard’s perfect season is on the ropes.

Listening to two guys with Car Talk accents call the Harvard-Penn game on the radio is my peak nostalgic Saturday soundtrack. It hits like an iced Dunks nestled in a styrofoam cup* to keep your hands warm on a cold day.

*before Cambridge banned styrofoam of course

This is going in my short-clips-for-faculty-meetings file right next to “oh no, disaster! What a bad idea!”

What an effort!
OK, bsky needs the Blue Jackets goal cannon video now because it's very close to Luke's

"skin as part of brain?"

This is that great intellect people talk about?

(It's amazing how many emails you can send when you're typing in 7/8, by the way)
I've spent several hours listening to Rush today (everything from A Farewell to Kings, now up to Moving Pictures). Other than a couple of the catchier & dubiously Ayn Rand-ian tunes, I couldn't tell you a single thing they're singing about. Vocals don't matter at all, just part of the arrangement

I like the SMT a lot. It is a good academic society that is pretty consistently led by people who respect and care about their colleagues.

Obviously this was an eventful conference, but getting to reunite with Tom and hear him give a talk (at his peak TFK-ness, the man can make a stand-up routine out of Paleo-Frankish notation), along with a bunch of other early music superstars, was the best panel I’ve seen in years
Congratulations to Thomas Forrest Kelly on his new book Melisma @oupacademic.bsky.social !

I promise this isn’t just an Eero Saarinen fan account now (though it’s not *not* that either), so just one more.

Look at that light. It’s glorious. After 9 hours in airports and planes I still stood there for several minutes last night.

Everybody‘s all “abolish music theory” because we get too excited about making a diagram but we aren’t the ones with big doodoo pants!!

Just want to say, apropos of nothing, that Jennifer Diaz would never, and that she is a freakin legend.

Now for some airplane mode. See you back in data center central sometime after midnight EST

Landed in Chicago and spent almost an hour on the tarmac due to issues with other planes. Ran to my connection, only to find a mostly empty 737 for the ride back to Dulles.

Others trickling in. We were supposed to take off 11 minutes ago and I’m starting to fear I didn’t download enough Andor.
Almost wheels up to go home. I’ve got six hours of flying/connecting ahead of me, but an iPad full of Andor and a fancy donut some
colleagues told me to buy in the terminal (E gates at MSP!). Great conference, all conferences should be in cities with abundant pubs and good transit 🚃🍻
