Third-most well-known composer named 'Schumann' - scholar, music writer, working parent, and "less-prestigious faculty" - based in southeast Michigan - founder of #beansky - TBTL Ten
I remember that former editors of the Michigan Daily wrote an op-ed that called the students who took issue with the content, "unappeasably woke"
(this was in 2022)

Remember how centrists and right-wingers reacted when Bright Sheng was asked to take the rest of the semester off after he inexplicably and unapologetically showed Laurence Olivier's reviled film version of "Othello" to his music composition seminar class?
Indiana University removed a Lecturer from her "Diversity, Human Rights, and Social Justice" course after a student filed a complaint about a graphic the instructor showed in class, which included "Make America Great Again" as an example of "Covert White Supremacy."

They gotta make a Bond movie where the only violence is slapping. That is what millennials demand from the franchise.

What if the next James Bond movie is a trippy multiverse fever dream where different actors play Bond and they call back past villains and missions because it represents a speculative view of the final moments of a person's existence, memory bent and stretched as the brain dies and the soul ascends

There is free parking in Ann Arbor today in honor of Veteran's Day, which is a bit of an A-to-C to me but I'll take it

The Musical Theatre major in my "Race in US Popular Music" class made an astute point today about vocal performance in heavy metal music, likening the approach to jazz where the voice operates like "just another instrument" in the ensemble

I think I'll have the courage to do this next term or the term after that, because I plan to perform in corpse paint at some point in 2026 (a potential improvised live-score thing to the classic Danish silent horror film "Häxan")
Do I need a character name when I don corpse paint?
Do I need a character name when I don corpse paint?
I almost wore corpse paint to class today (it's the first day of the heavy metal unit in "Race in US Popular Music") but I've never done that before (in life or as an instructor), didn't want to shave my mustache, worry that I'm so overweight I'll look silly, and wasn't sure what design to do

this is disgusting and egregious, it parallels the similarly disgusting and egregious bans of/protest of trans women athletes in the US
The International Olympic Committee is set to ban trans and intersex women from competition. This is despite the fact that for 20 years, the IOC has allowed trans athletes to compete and only 1 has ever competed and none have ever won a medal.

I made a new observation during a guest visit from a singer-songwriter friend in my Local Music class last week
she has no recordings despite being active for years, and, when she expressed doubt about her approach, I noted the $100 she's paid for a gig would take 30,000 Spotify streams to earn

We've made multiple adjustments to our routine in the last month on the advice of a pedeatric behavior health counselor and problems persist

I learned last week that the strongest writer in my "Local Music Community" class (wherein students attend and review local performances) is a columnist for the student newspaper here so no wonder they are so skilled in their writing

Very happy to hear from my students that they think the university-branded AI assistant is neither useful nor trustworthy (because they think it tracks what they do so faculty can see if they use it to cut corners on assigned work)

RFK Jr. would be dead by now had he been born into a working-class black family in New York. Musk and Trump as well. They could not survive a minute in my shoes--and my shoes aren't even that uncomfortable compared to so many others! Hell, there are people without shoes at all. And far less time.

America's safety net is gossamer thin, but I know that had I been born elsewhere, I would be dead by now. We are being led by a cadre of spoiled, ignorant Darwinists who do not realize that they have not survived because they are special or hardier, but because of wealth handed down to them.

I need this daily pill to live. I know because I tried to go without it before and it did not end up well. I know what's coming. And I know it is not sustainable. It took me a year or so to get to a point where ER visits and transfusions were needed. So maybe I can make it to midterms?

I think that many do not realize that when people say they will die without the ACA, they are not exaggerating or being dramatic. I take medication daily because without it my body does not recognize when to stop bleeding. So I take medication to "trick" my uterus into thinking I am pregnant.

The cheapest plan available to me (a Georgian) is over $1,000 a month. Healthcare is no longer an option for me. I will ration the medication I take for as long as I can and then I will wait to die.
