Whenever I say this, people get Really Mad, but it's true. Same of any other art, too. You have to read the book, watch the film, see the painting, listen to the song, whatever.

I'm sorry, but watching a video about it on YouTube is not enough. You have not experience the art.
"you have not played the game unless you've played the game" is one of my more annoying but unshakable opinions
the whole "don't play the game, just watch a video on youtube that will explain its story to you" is so disheartening because the issue of accessibility is genuinely really important but it's always just people who want to be spoon-fed nicely quantifiable information

UNPOPULAR OPINION: Spending hours gaming is better for your mental health than hours of doom scrolling through social media. Games give you critical thinking, strategy, stories, goals and actual dopamine, as opposed to anxiety.

If you use GMail, AI (Gemini) was turned on yesterday by default and now scans all of your content for machine learning. To turn off, go to Settings>General and scroll down. Uncheck the box for "Smart features."

There's other "Smart" add-ons as well, but that's the one that reads your content.

🚨 Yet again Ted Cruz and Steve Scalise are trying to sneak in a moratorium on state GenAi legislation.

If passed states can no longer enact laws for transparency, child safety, privacy, environmental protection etc.

We got 3 days to stop this. Call now!

Why am I so against generative AI in games?

Because I simply do not want my initial reaction to art to be one of suspicion and scrutiny, AI slop is fundamentally damaging my relationship to art and artistry, and I am deeply resentful that it is forcing me to be guarded when I should be wowed.

more than "you should play bad games because a maligned game might be good" i would prefer if the positive contrarian dogma was "you should play games that genuinely interest you regardless of what other people think" because holy shit the former leads to a lot of turning your misery into Content

Discworld QOTD, from Witches Abroad

"‘Will she live happily ever after?’ he said.

NOT FOREVER. BUT PERHAPS FOR LONG ENOUGH."
Discworld QOTD, from Going Postal

"'You wrote everything down, Crispin?' he said. 'Why?'

Crispin looked appalled.

'Got to keep records, Reacher,' he said. 'Can't cover y' tracks if you don't know where y'left 'em. Then... can put it all back, see, hardly a crime at all.'"
Discworld QOTD, from Moving Pictures

"‘You’re my own flesh and blood,’ said Dibbler, shaking his head. ‘How can you do this to me?’

‘Because I’m your own flesh and blood,’ said Soll.

Dibbler brightened. Of course, when you looked at it like that, it didn’t seem so bad."

It's recently come to my attention that someone made a fake UZDoom website. DO NOT CLICK IT!

The only official website for UZDoom is ZDoom dot org and the ONLY official place to get future UZDoom downloads would be the official UZDoom Github page!

Stay safe out there y'all

[Boosts appreciated]

Look, it’s trite to say, but I’m gonna say it anyway: tell your people that you love them. Apologize when you screw up, check in just to say hi, celebrate every mundane happiness you can with them. They need it more than you know, and so do you.

Some time ago I saw an artist say that folks often put a lot of effort into their work, and then post about it once. Which is such a shame!

Not everyone is awake at the same time, not everyone is online every day, and you put a lot of effort into it!

So go post your work again! Repost it again!

A really solid post and worth the read. Reminds me of something I read once about punk music and how the voice cracking and lofi recordings make the music really feel like an emotion the medium can't hold. "Playing bad games is kinda like doing emotional push-ups." is likewise a fantastic statement
Playing bad games doesn't ruin your credibility, it actually makes you learn about what you like. You start noticing effort, weird ideas, stuff that polished games smooth over.
Play more broken, weird, and ambitious trash; it’s good for your taste and good for your brain.

“When they rob us of art and emotion, that leads us towards the aesthetics of fascism. In this film, all the sets are real, the decor is human-sized, there are painstakingly created miniatures... It’s there to remind us that art is not only necessary, it is urgent. And AI can go fuck itself!”

two reasons for this:

1) some people tried to give really helpful advice on making sophisticated and interesting villain characters and that eventually morphed into "the villain should be just like the hero if the hero messed up" (dark mirror shit)

and 2...
I'll say it: I think its rly annoying and frankly amateurish that writers are constantly told their villains must be understandable or have sympathetic motivation to be interesting or realistic when all our big villains irl are in fact rich, stupid, selfish, trickster dillweeds and always have been

Makoto Yukimura was worried that Vinland Saga's farming arc and "I have no enemies" moment was a gamble that readers wouldn't like. I told him about the J. Cole meme from the Kendrick Lamar and Drake rap beef. This is how he reacted.

When I went to Pokémon I had lunch the week before I left with Neal Suggs, who was my last boss at Xbox and was in many ways the reason I left. (He’s at Google now.) He gave me the most important leadership tip I ever got. /1
Here’s a thing I’ll add, as someone who’s been there: if you’re the CEO of a platform with millions of users, you don’t get to have as much fun on that platform, period. And your job is to eat shit every time a legitimate critique of policy comes up. That’s the gig. Don’t sign up if you aren’t game.
i am catching up on the moderation discourse and it’s really annoying that this episode basically goes back to leadership trying to have a goof and a gag. there’s not a lot of room-reading happening which comes across as immature and unprofessional

If "AI" was as valuable as they say it is, they wouldn't be selling it to you. They'd be using it themselves in secret to make the next Minecraft, the next Avatar, the next Hello Kitty and then they'd sell that to you.

They're trying to sell you a sick goose, while pretending it lays golden eggs.

💯 hahaha. it's def colored my perspective on this whole discourse bc my evergreen kneejerk reaction is like, why would you deny yourself an opportunity to become stronger?? but ofc not everyone is here for that

Given how much of the games industry is a shitshow dedicated to beating the creativity out of people, I'm genuinely joyful to see a prolific Undertale/Deltarune modder hired to make edits to the game for a one-off event stream.
