EVERY CRAWLING, PUTRID THING “It would be accurate to say that Busboom’s fiction is a love letter to schlocky, neon horror, peppered with sticky-sweet nostalgia and loving luridity. It would, however,...

People need to understand the precedent here. If the U.S. claims the right to sweep in and abduct a president it accuses of crimes, what stops Russia from doing the same to Ukraine, or China claiming that authority over Taiwan?

2026 is off to a hell of a start. Emphasis on hell.
Summarizing... We attacked Venezuela without congressional approval and kidnapped their leader. We do not have any support from our government for our health care. They are actually considering building a "Victory Arch" in DC... and our President has said it's jsut Democrats saying UNCONSTITUTIONAL.

First #FossilFriday of 2026: here's #paleoart of Dromaeosaurus atop a half-eaten juvenile Chasmosaurus. Dromaeosaurus was no Velociraptor clone, but a relatively robust and probably hard-biting raptorial dinosaur. Painted... two years ago now, I guess, in 2024. #fossil #paleontology #dinosaur

This is an outrageous abdication of journalistic duty. Grok's apology was prompted by a human, as was its equally vehement self-defense. People are willingly hurling themselves into the AI trashbin at the bidding of oligarchs who will happily remove them from their jobs.

The NYE hangover has been defeated, and the first submission of 2026 has been completed. Also did 30 crunches and took the dog for a 45-minute walk in the cold.

The major highlights of the year for me were THE OCTOBER FILM HAUNT by @michaelwehunt.bsky.social, THE BUFFALO HUNTER HUNTER by @sgj.bsky.social, and finally getting around to reading Rachel Carson's SILENT SPRING. Also really dug Harlan Ellison's THE OTHER GLASS TEAT and Emily Henry's BEACH READ.
We all read some bad books this year. I didn’t finish some and had to write negative reviews here and there. However, what I really want to hear about is the stuff that blew your mind, that made you think, that stayed with you. Tell me about the cool books you loved this year.

We're talking going from "two generations in the Midwest" to "three generations in multiple countries." And maybe adding a kaiju? It's a lot, but it feels somehow right. Like maybe I've been trying too long to keep them separate.
In recent months I've revisited a trunk novella and begun the process of reworking it into a full-length novel. There is another story/novella I've long considered combining with this one, though doing so would broaden the scope and cast considerably. It's starting to feel like the way, though.

I've bought a couple books this year. Did my part to keep my favorites writing.
I've also read a few, and I'm comfortable saying that The Buffalo Hunter Hunter by SGJ @sgj.bsky.social was the very best book I've read all year. It's fuckin fantastic!

If you haven't read it, shame on you!

On my birthday I saw three belted kingfishers along a snowy riverbank while walking my dog. The first flew ahead of us after we spotted it from the parallel sidewalk and led us to the second and third. Their laughing, rattling cries filled the frozen air and it was eerie and nice at the same time.
Okay, bird people: what was your favorite bird encounter this year? This was 100% mine.
Saw not one but TWO snowy owls at the MSP airport today! One of them ate a mouse!

Here's another take on a song which has been running through my head a lot these days —

"Satan thought up a plan
Dressed as a man
Walking the earth and since he began
The world is hell for you and me
But what a heaven it will be
When that man is dead and gone."

My wife and I are attempting a no-buy/low-buy year in 2026 with extremely limited exceptions. I've been guzzling Christmas bourbon with the in-laws and I'm feeling like making a drunk purchase or two before the gate closes. What should I get?

Alright if I ever go Florida Man and acquire a gator for a pet I have a name.
Also, Hello Kitty isn't even the best character in the Hello Kitty universe:

My favorite Christmas present this year was this book from my 5y/o nephew, full of his illustrations of various monsters (mostly Godzilla- or Kong-related, as the title suggests, but also some original creations!). He is so excited that I know who Gigan is. I'm so excited that he does.

This is a really good point that I had not run into before: these "creators" have no further insight into their alleged creation than the average audience member and that is why it cannot be called art (besides all the other obvious reasons).
