I picked up Far Cry Primal because obviously I wanted to play a game where I'm a caveman fighting cannibals and taming sabertooth tigers (duh!) But there comes a point in lots of Ubisoft games where it all feels the same: soulless enemy bases to clear, soulless collectibles to collect, etc.

I'm back in Minneapolis after a week away. If you've placed a physical order, I'll ship it ASAP. And if you haven't placed one, consider this weird eco-horror book, which Blog Without a Face described as "lush, doomed, and mean in the best way": www.cursedmorselspress.com/product/the-...

The rain is intensifying, and Ahmed, the orphan, is crying from the cold. No one hears him, and he has no clothes to protect him. Please, help him immediately. Even a little warmth could save his life. 🙏

I finished reading The Husbands by @hollygramazio.bsky.social, and this novel rules, y'all. Funny, insightful, and twisty-turny. I really dug it.

If you're ever feeling depressed and need a pick-me-up, just remember that you're here on Earth at the same time as Björk, at least until she departs for the next galaxy over.

What a delight it is to introduce someone to their first non-Stephen King horror read. That's not a slight against King. It just feels good to broaden (and weirden--is that a word?) someone's horizons. I got to do that all the time when I taught Horror Lit. Wish I had more chances to do it now!

Me earlier this year: I don't want to pursue this novella idea further because it's too light and fluffy.
Me at the end of this year: I don't want to purse this other novella idea further because it's too dark and depressing.

I swear, I WILL find a novella idea I can stick with...

This year, I WILL see the snowy owls at Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport. I swear to bird god, it will happen.

I've been trying to text friends more often, especially ones I don't see frequently. I want to keep this practice going in the new year. It's too easy to fall out of touch for a long time and then suddenly go, oh wait, friendship!

In my life, I've encountered preachers on two ends of a spectrum:
-The preacher at my parents' church who delivers the safest, most nothingburger sermons that never risk upsetting or inspiring anyone.
-The preachers at my job who keep it real and explicitly support queer people and immigrants 24/7.

Scrooge (1970) is still my absolute favorite adaptation of A Christmas Carol (great music, casting, set design, tone, and direction), but I just watched The Muppets Christmas Carol for the first time, and it's a lot of fun.

Correction: “Winter Savory” by @breathinghead.bsky.social is a very unsettling Christmas-set story.

Cruelty Squad is incredible and also pretty hard! One of the few difficult games I've actually enjoyed in a long time.
