I asked what that was.
"You say: "I am sorry to hear that.""
I was like... but that doesn't "show" anything. That's the same as asking "How's it going?"

Every autistic person I know including myself is deeply empathetic, but I think we don't perform it the way neurotypicals do, and the way we do show empathy is rejected and shut down so we might stop doing it altogether. But that doesn't mean we lack the skill.
When autistics feel empathy, it generally doesn’t “look” like neurotypical empathy. Don’t expect autistics to “look” empathic.
