Why am I so against generative AI in games?

Because I simply do not want my initial reaction to art to be one of suspicion and scrutiny, AI slop is fundamentally damaging my relationship to art and artistry, and I am deeply resentful that it is forcing me to be guarded when I should be wowed.

My team is hiring narrative designers again!
* Entry to mid-level!
* Casual mobile games with campy fun stories
* Big caveat: after a few months remote, you gotta do a year or two in-office in Beijing!
* Pay is low by US standards but great for Beijing or Europe

"Great writing can't be taught."

Total bullshit. Writing is just as much of a teachable and learnable skill as playing an instrument or acting or painting. You don't have to have any prodigy to write a great book - just a strong work ethic, years of practice, and a willingness to innovate.
what is your least favorite piece of writing advice and why? 👀

If you’re naming me in the same breath as TTRPG studies then you should be following and listening to and citing Professor Torner who has done more for analog game infrastructure than any one person can comprehend. (Any number of us shine from reflecting Evan’s light)
Indeed. The purchaseable *product* we call the TTRPG begins in the 1970s with Western Gunfight, Chainmail, and D&D.

Yet role-playing "parlor games," simulations, and similar are centuries old and draw from a well that resembles all the positive stuff about D&D.

Parlor games were feminized...

i understand that these corporations are beloved by many, but as soon as you start defending their use of AI, even if it's "a little bit", i need you to understand that you are being used as a corporate tool to normalize AI. reject it with all your might. corporations arent your friend.

Larian's horrible hirring process is an open secret in the industry – insane amounts of unpaid work in "writing tests", excessive numbers of interviews, months and months of back and forth, etc. Everyone in games narrative circles has heard the stories at this point, probably from multiple people.
I know this because they tried to recruit me and I strongly considered it but they’re also a “do an unpaid writing test where you have to also make it playable” company so that’s not something I vibe with

idk man I don't care if you watch it, but it's insane to me that every 3-6 months we all huddle around to watch Keighley's vision of a medium that is so sterile, so stagnant, so soulless compared to the medium I exist in and love.

Games are so fucking cool right now and you would never know.
