Today is the day to tell a strange story.

The long version we'll tell later, but the short version is this. In an attic, in his late great-uncle's house, @jon.inkle.co found a locked trunk. It took twenty years to open. Last summer he did.

Inside was a wiring diagram, and a stack of books.

8. A Highland Song (store.steampowered.com/app/1240060/...)

more "breath of the wild" than breath of the wild, moira needs to get to the coast in a couple days to learn important facts about her life, which requires running away from home and climbing some mountains. i cried. beautiful game.
A Highland Song on Steam

Just played and finished "a Highland Song." The ending moved me to tears. Can anyone recommend any other short, sweet, impactful games?

Heaven's Vault ($9.99) - those who loved Outer Wilds and have itched for more, you need Heaven's Vault.

a lost history has been found by Aliya Elasra. she needs to translate it... but there's still so much more to do beyond that. journey, not destination. store.steampowered.com/app/774201/H...

Heaven's Vault

narrative-driven "puzzler" where the puzzle is the translation of an ancient language by your archaeologist MC. i put puzzler in quotes because i found it v. enjoyable & accessible as someone who doesn't go in much for puzzle-driven games

Expelled was one of my favourite surprises this year. Overboard was a really cool concept but felt a touch ‘narrative tech demo’, whereas Expelled really embraced the concept and wrapped it in so much fun writing and design - not least actively rewarding bad behaviour better than any recent game.

"An attempted-murder mystery set in an a 1920s all-girls private school reveals itself to also be an eviscerating takedown of British class politics. Witty and beautifully drawn... it has the feel of a really excellent graphic novel."

We began investigating through a simple prototype - before we built the machine.

The "game" has moved far, far beyond this now. But the old prototype is "playable".

I'm certainly not biased. Totally. Stop looking at my suspiciously-kaleidoscope-shaped essay, it's unrelated I swear.
