i should also say i actually find them deeply heroic for fighting against the military expansion of christendom in a way that i just do not find modern pagans heroic at all, because the former were fighting to protect their sense of self and the latter are fighting to turn back the clock
Beyond anything else, I actually reject this mentality out of respect for my actual pagan ancestors, who rightly took a "haha who cares it's all politics" approach to religion and as a result built one of the more tolerant nations of Europe on both chronological sides of their conversion.

I'm a big fan of Naguib Mahfouz's short novella on Akhenaten which seems to essentially posit he was a prophet of Islam.
Famously Akhenaten invented an entire new religion just to make everyone participate in worshipping exactly as he did.
