I strongly suspect many people would be a lot less aggressively anti-AI at this point if they hadn’t just spent two years feeling constantly pressured, often by very unpleasant people and actors, to use it Or Else
As a lawyer I’m getting a daily machine gun of come-ons to use AI in legal research, have AI draft my documents, let AI suggest my arguments, AI can take a flying fuck at a rolling seven-fingered doughnut

There is a tremendous opportunity for a brand new generation of media outlets to rise up right now because many news outlets that spent decades painstakingly building their credibility are seeing it torched by bootlickers with incredible speed.

This is fantastic news, a triumph of medicine! And the overall cervical cancer rate in Oz is dropping, too, almost certainly due to HPV vaccinations.

And exactly the sort of progress RFK Jr. is trying to kill. Along with killing our citizens.
Congrats to Australia, this is really cool!

This and the discussion about how academics can now just read AI summaries of things really drives home how much these guys always confuse the product for the goal. You don't do a coloring sheet because you want to have a colored sheet at the end!!! The coloring is the point!!!
This is just sad.

Writers gotta start getting it in their contracts that generative AI won’t be used at any stage in any part of the process, this is one of the things agents are allegedly supposed to exist for

Big name authors who have clout with publishers absolutely must lead the way on this
This is not getting on the case of those Tor authors who had it foisted on them unknowingly (though I am definitely against whoever made that decision).

But when you run your own newsletter, you know exactly what you're doing when you prompt the slop machine for custom gunk matching your article.

Insane but true fact: making US roads as safe as Canadian, Australian, or European roads would save more lives than eliminating murder from the US.

We spent a year investigating billionaires for @washingtonpost.com.

We found: the wealthiest 100 Americans gave $1.1 billion to influence the 2024 elections — 140x more than they did in 2000. And almost all of that giving boosted Republicans.

Behind this important reversal is a member of the Coast Guard who saw what was happening and had the courage to leak it to the press. That person deserves serious praise.

This is what genAI "guardrails" are, and why they are inherently insufficient.

genAI inherently outputs the statistically most likely sequence of words, and "guardrails" are basically just a list of words to filter from that output to the user.

And they stole literally all the words to train on.
One way of thinking about genAI is:

Suppose you steal every English word on the internet, and then look up what words are most likely to follow the word "throbbing."

And then whenever you see "throbbing" you slap on a likely word

You're gonna end up talking about throbbing dicks in weird contexts

demonic shit that would be eyebrow raising if trump goons did it
This is a new low from a govt plumbing the depths of performative cruelty in hopes that the public won’t notice they have no answers to the real issues facing this country

A sensible, humane govt would focus on safe routes to prevent people making dangerous small boat crossings

MeToo did not go far enough. People were saying "MeToo has gone too far" when it had barely just picked up momentum.

It was an attempt at reckoning with how institutionally misogynistic and sexually exploitative most institutions are and what women are constantly put through. So it was crushed.
This idea that #metoo was a temporary piece of insanity that happened because America was too woke...

Fuck you. It was a temporary moment in time when people decided, for the first time, that 20 women were finally equal to one man.

Has anyone who has been online for the last 10 years somehow not internalized that when it comes to matters like consent and exploitation, there is no one too beloved to be held accountable? Their fame is not a shield, but a measure of how deep the horror and disappointment will be when they fall.
"What if one of YOUR favorite politicians/celebrities/etc is on the list?" Did you all not notice how quickly we dropped Neil Gaiman when we found out about the things he did? Do you know how beloved that guy used to be and how loathed he is now? I think that right there should answer your question.
