She/her. Interests: art films, cult films, vintage television, video art, late night radio, backlisted books, dharma bums, suburban anomie, field recordings, found footage, lost futures, words, sounds, you.
Watching Stanley Kramer's On the Beach & my big takeaways are that Fred Astaire & Ava Gardner are surprisingly great, Gregory Peck is exactly what you'd expect & Anthony Perkins is egregiously miscast. As nuclear apocalypse films with submarines in them go I still prefer The Bedford Incident.

There’s a Mary Tyler Moore episode where WJM hires Lou Grant’s fail-nephew who, when assigned to shoot live footage of a five-alarm fire, instead films nearby ants building a nest “to show the viewer that in the midst of chaos, life goes on” & I’ve always kind of sympathized with that.

Fucking hell. Never, ever accept the role of Poet Laureate.
I'm looking at you Simon Armitage.
Forty years since Ted Hughes wrote his single most excruciating Laureate poem, for the wedding of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson

Everyone had something to say about their accents, but they talked like my grandfather & so even though vehicular everything makes my eyes glaze over it was a comforting listen.
My grandparents always had Car Talk on. Not because they cared about cars (they didn't) but because they liked hearing working class people on the radio.

The impact of Frederick Wiseman on nonfiction filmmaking was seismic beyond measure and beyond compare. Like how do you even begin to consider his influence on documentary technique or his decades of insight into how institutions (and artistic spaces) operate? What a treasure. R.I.P.

Special thanks for alerting me to a delightful indie I never knew about, Stony Island, especially appropriate for right now because just when you think it can't get more old-school Chicago it makes a sudden great tangent into New Orleans jazz. Currently on Tubi & Hoopla so what're you waiting for.

I think I've woken up to them outside the house twice now? I'm okay with it - time wasted trying to scare me is time spent not kidnapping a vulnerable neighbor.

Anyway if you go out at fuckass o'clock with your phone in one hand and a whistle ready in the other, they see you and leave lol.
I’ve talked with two different people who’ve experienced this (and are aware of it)

Wuthering Heights? A blatant hacienda melodrama that camps out on poverty row, pushing mediocre actors & hyperbolic montage to the max, before blasting triumphantly into the stratosphere, Luis Bunuel's 1954 Mexican version is a true surrealist classic.
