On top of every other splendid thing happening right now I gotta cracked tooth. It’s getting prepped for a crown next week but it’s interesting how your brain can just willfully tune out a constant low-level jaw pain & sinus headache until a dentist suddenly asks, “Do you chew ice cubes?” (I don’t.)

Since Joyce Carol Oates’ name is making the rounds, I saw her do a short story reading several years ago at IU Northwest—not exactly an “elite” big-name-writer-draw college—& she was mesmerizing, audience was laughing at the little elfin lady’s wry jokes & then boom, you could hear a pin drop.

Apropos of nothing you could do worse right now than read Henry Adams’ Democracy: An American Novel. Not only is it entertaining but if you won’t believe a descendant of two presidents, a congressman & a diplomat who says “they’re all alike & all in it for themselves” I don’t know what to tell you.

Via my mother cleaning out her cabinets I’ve inherited an old Duncan Hines saucepan & little stockpot my grandmother had back in the 1940s. She was very into the whole Diet for a Small Planet thing so in her memory I inaugurated the stockpot by making a nice dal.

Long, but stick with it: this is a brilliant, inspiring story and it moves on multiple levels.
A heavy music festival in Blackfeet Nation this summer was abut more than just music – it was a protective ceremony to shelter Indigenous youth from suicidal distress.

If you’re apprehensive about having to scroll past yet another political hot take don’t worry, I do believe I’m through with that shit for the rest of my natural days. Time to tune out & go watch Day of the Jackal.

Loving today's news that the mysterious "fedora man" outside the Louvre heist was actually a 15-year-old museum visitor who dresses like a 1940s French detective all the time, just because. apnews.com/article/louv...
Fedora man unmasked: Meet the teen behind the Louvre mystery photo

There's no way I can do this. Do you know many movies I've watched this year? And how many of them were bangers? I rewatched Vertigo on New Years' Day. I did the entire David Lynch filmography after he died. I saw La Guerre est finie a couple weeks ago. An embarrassment of riches.
What is the best movie not from this year that you’ve seen this year? Bonus points if you say why

Watching Fool for Love which honestly isn't that great but "Altman film with Kim Basinger & Harry Dean Stanton" isn't something I'm going to skip. The contained-set ambiance feels a little like a rural version of Trouble in Mind & the opening credits revealing it's a Golan-Globus project amused me.

By the way. I’m not even really arguing with Chipman. I just think corporations acting like population is the population of 30-40 years ago is so normal that we need constant reminders of how insane it is in light of what and how much has changed.
Disagree. The mistake Target made isn’t unusual. I mean, it’s odd/unusual/notable when an American corporation acts like the US has the demographics it has not when they pretend it’s still 30 years ago. Like the “we’ll be fine, where else are they gonna go” was basically Hollywood’s motto until ‘16
My unpopular take is, while it's obviously GOOD "The boycott broke Target" connected as narrative; there's a 70/30 shot that Target went "unwoke" in the first place because they knew the more expensive big-box was bound to eat sh-- in a recession and blaming "vibes" would sit better w/ shareholders

It Finally Happened To Me: I've seen a Johnnie To film I just didn't like at all, PTU. In fairness I did pick it as the first to knock off my "watch before they leave Criterion at month's end" list because the synopsis looked the least interesting to me so, you know, they can't all be winners.

Look man you can do what you want, but if someone tells you "I think Sabrina Carpenter looks like she's coming this way with a gun!" you should listen.
It is okay to have opinions about the relative attractiveness of famous people but you do not actually have to vocalize those thoughts, and arguably you shouldn't
"I think Sabrina Carpenter loo--" shh, shh, there's no world in which I want to hear the end of this sentence

Letterboxd Friday #LastFourWatched 📽️: An ill-fated Purple Rain sequel that, I'm sorry, I liked more than its predecessor; a melancholy slice-of-life indie; a "comfortable bourgeoise in a repressive regime" tale not nearly as good as The Official Story; a fantastical blaxploitation favorite.
