This generation's satanic panic.
Tucked into the Cass Report, deep in the appendices, you'll find that they reviewed thousands of patient records and found no one who'd been harmed by puberty blockers and fewer than 10 detransitions.
It’s even worse knowing that Wes actually met trans kids, listened to them cry about how awful it would be to go through the wrong puberty, how this is a lifesaving treatment, and is fucking doing this anyway

It’s even more heartless than shutting them out of conversations

Attacks on abortion and trans rights are disturbingly similar—and the Skrmetti arguments at the Supreme Court were a prime example. The playbook:

*Claiming bans aren’t bans
*Making flawed global comparisons
*Weaponizing consent and regret
*Invoking eugenics
*Leaving human rights to the states
Conservatives Are Constructing a Bad-Faith Argument Against Trans Rights at the Supreme Court. It’s Worked for Them Before.
The arguments in Skrmetti are nauseatingly familiar.

I come from the right, and I get angry with Democrats for not fighting the Right on culture war issues. The right believes transgenderism must be erased. That is NOT what most Americans believe. Democrats, most Americans are where you are on this issue. But you gotta FIGHT for them on this issue.

It’s genuinely shocking if you’re remotely familiar with the basic facts of trans care and youth medicine.

It is *profoundly* difficult to access gender-affirming care as a minor and the Times has printed more than a dozen articles implying that it is too easy.
in hindsight the NYT anti-trans crusade is one of the most despicable things that any big time journalism outfit in this country has ever done. a perfect and clearly intentional layup for the fascists on the Supreme Court

my not-unprofessional opinion is this trans youth care ban would not be before the Supreme Court at all if not for Alliance Defending Freedom (aka the people who brought you Dobbs) and would not be treated as a "tough" issue for "even liberals" if not for the New York Times

Chase Strangio said we need to intervene in any and all narratives that work to blame or isolate transgender people. 👀 Step up, push back, be loud. Trans people need to know they aren’t alone and that their allies are legion.

So, that was it. Oral arguments in US vs Skrmetti is now in the history books, though the judgement won't come until June.

I haven't read other commentary. Not yet. I wanted to write a thread of my impressions first, and see what the experts are saying afterwards. 🧵

I'm just out of oral arguments, and wow. They're really arguing trans people's humanity.

The primary question for the conservative justices seems to be whether states can terribly harm transgender minors to protect detransitioners.

I'm not kidding when I say that somewhere down the line, someone needs to seriously consider nominating Chase Strangio for a seat on the Supreme Court.
Chase Strangio is a hero exposing themselves to RW violence by making forceful pro-trans arguments before the Supreme Court. The Pullman Porters organized a cadre of bodyguards to protect Thurgood Marshall when he was dismantling segregation law. I hope someone does the same for Chase.

I'm not optimistic though. I can easily see a 6-3 decision from Alito that basically says it is not a sex based discrimination and trans people are not a quasi suspect class which would relegate explicit discriminations to rational basis. This would be a catastrophic decision.

As SCOTUS hears arguments today in the US vs Skrmetti case, here's a helpful research brief on the benefits of family and community support for trans youth compiled by the @ncfr.bsky.social
Critical Benefits of Familial and Community Support for Transgender Youth
NCFR Research Summary More than 100 pieces of legislation targeting the transgender community in more than 30 states in the U.S. have been introduced so far in 20211. The majority of these bills would negatively impact transgender children, adolescents, and their families in that they limit the rights, opportunities, and care of transgender youth, who are already at increased risk for negative mental health outcomes.

1. In a major development, the first national consensus guidelines for trans youth have been released in France.

They recommend affirmation and medical care, denounce "wait and see."

They refute much of the Cass Review.
