This is a thread about why I’m in a chevra kadisha, or more specifically, why I do taharah – the act of ritually preparing a dead person for burial. Sometimes people act as if it means I’m a particularly good or giving person, but I don’t see it that way. 1/6

1995, studying in Prague for a year. I went to Bucharest by myself, fully intending to shell out for a hotel since there wasn’t a lot of backpacker-level tourist infrastructure yet. Showed up to the hotel to check in & the desk clerk took one look at me and said “You can’t stay here.”
I would like to hear about a time someone, a stranger even, was very kind to you without any prompting, ulterior motive, or strings attached.

Homicide detectives are investigating an address connected to Hollywood director Rob Reiner.
According to a Los Angeles Fire Department official, the deceased were a man and a woman, ages 78 and 68. The same ages as Reiner and his wife.

On Sunday mornings I greet kids coming to religious school. When I started, it was just a friendly thing to do. Years ago I was trained to scan the parking lot and approaching people for threats. I always do so now, although some days it seems unnecessary. On some days, I see the need more clearly.
