not too late for a flu shot btw, flu historically often peaks in february and by all accounts it is pretty bad this year
Flu deaths exceeded COVID deaths last winter and we may be on track for the same thing this year!
I can speak anecdotally that at the hospital I work at we’ve had very low covid census. We test anyone experiencing respiratory symptoms, and we’ve had very few people with Covid who have needed to be hospitalized. Which is a relief because we are absolutely inundated with flu rn

“OK, well trans people do exist in society, but I respect your right to your beliefs so much I’m willing to move you out of society for as long as you hold those beliefs. What? You thought we should’ve moved them out? Why? These aren’t THEIR beliefs.”

Wonderful admission from the cops that non violent action is effective and really really makes them sad.
This gets progressively funnier with every use of the term "floppy".

The right has united around a rejection of government as the solution to social problems. Which means they can generally agree to block new policies and programs. The left is united in its desire for government solutions. But that means they have to face the harder task of agreeing on what to do. 1/
Real q: why are modern American progressives so bad at building coalitions? The right wing is this ideologically incoherent hodge-podge of unrelated or even oppositional causes, yet they manage to work as a bloc. By contrast, liberals + leftists spend a huge amount of energy fighting w each other.

it’s not that this US administration has a different, competing version of what it means to do good. They know and even share our conception of good, and oppose it on purpose to make their enemies mad. Consciously, purposefully, gleefully evil.

Mary, 36 hours in, sprawled in straw, sweaty and screaming. She's pooped twice pushing in front of three wise men and 27 farm animals. The north star glimmers and Pentatonix appears to serenade her: "Mary Did You Know."

Mary Hulks out and rifles three camels at them, screaming YES I FUCKING KNOW.

Not a mandate.

I don't care how many times they say it, he didn't even win a majority of the popular vote & barely more than his opponent. A win, sure. But a narrow one.

This bluster is meant to bowl over opposition, but the reality is that they have a thin margin that they'll inevitably lose.
Tom Homan: "If I gotta send twice as many officers to LA because we're not getting any assistance, then that's what we're going to do. We got a mandate. President Trump is serious about this. I'm serious about it. This is gonna happen with or without you."

Please don't call what RFK Jr. and Jay Bhattacharya are going to do medieval. It's not medieval. It's nothing like the Middle Ages. People in the Middle Ages were happy to try all kinds of things to not die of the plague and if you'd given them antibiotics and vaccines they would have loved it.

Not only is pertussis in babies terrifying, they cannot even be fully vaccinated before they are 1 year old so their life can literally depend on you and everyone else to be vaccinated and protect them!
Pertussis in infants is terrifying but it’s not just the cough.

It’s the fact that babies literally STOP BREATHING.

~2/3 of infants hospitalized have apnea (life threatening pauses in breathing)

Vaccination starts at 2 mo so it’s important EVERYONE is immunized to protect our littlest ones.

Truth.

Also, once like a generation goes without seeing Grandpa dying in a wheat thresher, people forget that it was written in blood, and piss and moan while taking a system built over 100 years for absolute granted...while they howl to tear it down.

See also, vaccination.
I had a teacher in highschool who managed to pound into my thick skull that every single food (and safety) regulation we have now was written in the blood of the people who died for want of it. There's nothing superfluous about them

SCOTUS responded to congressional pressure for a stricter code of ethics by loosening its standards.

Congress ought to respond by refusing to fund the Supreme Court. If the justices want to let Harlan Crow pay them, make him foot the whole bill. Drop the pretense that they’re public servants.

What is common knowledge in your field but shocks outsiders?

We don't all have the same number of bones or muscles. There's an average, I guess. We all kind of cluster around it. Some muscles are pretty rare. Some people just invent their own artisanal bones.
Court ordered therapy almost never works and usually makes the problem worse.

Can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make them stop harming their kid/spouse, the kid/spouse won’t rebuild the lost affection, and mostly abusers just learn to be more efficient and cruel abusers.
