When fossil fuels such as the coal in this bag are burned, small particles called fly ash are released into the air. Crawford Lake’s sediments capture a dramatic increase in fly ash in the 1950s, coinciding with rapid industrialization locally and globally.

Turns out, climate is connected to health and human safety. Shocking, we know 🤯

Gosh, if only people were studying this as one big health problem... /s

Last night in Portland, Portland city council person @candaceavalos.bsky.social woke up to her car and home on fire from suspected arson. She has been a target of the far-right for months, by people like Andy Ngo, who has admitted on court record that his posts targeting people can lead to violence.

So they didn’t like the ad. Let’s just post Reagan’s 5 min speech against tariffs as it appears on YouTube.

It's a pretty good rule of thumb that a "social contagion" is just a new mainstream awareness of another part of the human condition.
Also just to be clear self harm and eating disorders arent a social media contagion. Kids do it cause they’re miserable and will do it without being prompted by the internet. I sure know i did before ever seeing content about it

Also, a garden is a long view way to supplement to your produce needs, because it can take at least a year to get a decent harvest from many, many plants.
There has always been something a bit 'off' about the idea of self sufficiency. Growing your own food is a great hobby, but it will never replace getting food from farmers. My impression is that it fosters the libertarian fantasy that you can live outside society
On Threads, the usual suspects are telling ppl about to lose SNAP benefits to just start a garden. As a gardener, I had to laugh. You need at LEAST an acre of land to feed a family of 4. Start-up costs are enormous. But yes, subsistence farming on the balcony of your rental apartment is the answer

Just a reminder (and I speak from experience here) that food pantries usually do not have anything for people with food allergies or other dietary needs -- medical, cultural, spiritual, etc. They do not deliver, either, so if someone is homebound or cannot drive ... they cannot get to them.

Julia Métraux is the best I've found yet for disability reporting.
I wish we did more investigative reporting about what's happening in the disability community. Vital benefits are being cut on the daily, and we so rarely hear about that in the mainstream news because everyone expects that it should be like this for disabled people, and that's a big problem.

Remind me what usually happens when a right-wing populist builds an extrajudicial, unconstitutional private army
ICE is stockpiling arms, including chemical weapons, guided missile warheads and explosive components. The spending dwarfs anything we've ever seen in the agency - a 700% increase.

The President is building an army to attack his own country.
