Did you know that in Wisconsin it is legal for kids as young as 16 to marry under certain circumstances? My colleague State Senator Mark Spreitzer introduced a bill to ban child marriage, but not a single Republican has signed on as a co-sponsor, nor have they agreed to give the bill a hearing.

The President of the United States posted a video of Barack and Michelle Obama as apes - during Black History Month - which repeats his most consistent lie that he somehow did not lose the 2020 election.

WI's gun laws need some work. Everytown for Gun Safety released their annual state rankings for gun reform, and our state came in at #22.

According to their analysis, if Wisconsin enacted the gun policies of the top 10 states, we could save over 400 lives per year over the next decade.

After years of Republican legislators and talk radio personalities denigrating the teaching profession here in Wisconsin, nearly every school district is struggling to attract and retain experienced educators.

The Trump regime is growing increasingly lawless, and nowhere is that more apparent than with ICE.

Last week, U.S. District Court Judge Patrick Schiltz of Minnesota noted nearly 100 court orders that ICE had violated in just a single month. Said Schiltz:

Wisconsin has a projected $2.5 billion surplus, and yet Republicans seem perfectly willing to let local school districts go to referendum every few years - including 74 to be voted on this April - because they refuse to increase state support.

It may be below freezing outside, but it's a green Monday nonetheless.

Today, I was proud to join my Democratic colleagues, led by Senator LaTonya Johnson and Representative Darrin Madison, in putting forward a comprehensive marijuana legalization bill for Wisconsin.

Big corporations are starting to undertake massive layoffs.

Amazon - 30,000 job cuts announced since October
UPS - 30,000 jobs to be cut in 2026
Dow Chemical - 4,500 jobs to be cut

A big reason why? Investments in AI and automation.

Any system where billionaires exist, yet people who work full time can't afford to pay for basic needs is broken and must be remade.

For a single adult in MKE Co with 0 kids, the min living wage is $20.09/hr, per the MIT Living Wage Calculator. WI's min wage is $7.25, and hasn't increased since '09

I'm in Minnesota today for a national day of solidarity regarding the recent federal occupation of Minneapolis.
Over 560 state legislators from dozens of state
s signed on to a joint letter calling for - at minimum:

The safest communities have the most resources, not the most police.

The best public safety initiatives are those that target poverty, not the impoverished.

Our last listening session of the season is happening Tuesday, February 3rd at UWM. I hope you can join us!

We'll discuss the latest on cannabis legislation, preparing for potential ICE mobilization in MKE, and whatever else you want to talk about. @ryanclancywi.bsky.social will be on hand as well.

The Olympics are in Italy next month. Milan's mayor had this to say:

“Bringing to Milan a militia which distinguished itself — this is not my opinion — with criminal acts, which kills, which enters in the homes of American citizens without authorization, I do not think that that is a good idea.”

FACT: Wisconsin's state & local taxes as a % of income are at an all-time low for the 2nd year running. So why are people so upset about taxes?

The answer is simple - WI is a regressive tax state, meaning that the less money you make the higher your combined state+local effective tax rate.

I was proud to stand I solidarity with colleagues at the federal, state, and local level in West Allis yesterday as dozens of neighbors gathered to protest ICE’s targeting of peaceful protestors, including the horrific murders of 2 people in Minneapolis.

The Constitutional crisis is here.

U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal was recently informed of a secret ICE policy that directs agents to ignore the 4th Amendment to the Constitution and enter homes without a judicial warrant to perform civil immigration arrests.

When the gov't detains a person, they have a legal and moral obligation to provide adequate medical care. ICE is failing to do this in dramatic fashion.

31 people died in ICE custody in 2025 - more than the entire Biden Presidency. The detainee population has gone from below 40,000 to over 73,000.

The numbers are in: Elon Musk and Trump's "DOGE" was a huge failure.

At the same time the federal workforce was reduced by 317,000 people (including 2,400 in Wisconsin), federal spending actually increased from $6.95 to $7.01 Trillion, according to the Treasury Department.

It must be nice to live in the fantasy world that WI Republicans seem to inhabit. In their world, if you simply ignore systemic racism and sexism, it will just go away.

The State Senate voted to approve a bill today that would exempt most cash tips from state income tax. This is bad policy for a number of reasons.

If we really want to make life easier for people who are struggling with low wages and high costs, we should eliminate the tipped wage of $2.33/hr.

All workers deserve the right to collectively bargain over wages, benefits, and working conditions. Today, I was proud to stand with my Democratic colleagues in support of legislation that would allow nurses at UW Health do do exactly that.

We must take care of the people who take care of us.

Wisconsin's largest private school voucher program - the statewide WPCP - is primarily serving students who never attended public school. Out of 4,370 new enrollees in the 2025-26 school year, just 21.7% attended public school the year prior.

At long last, the President has revealed his "concept of a plan" for lower healthcare costs.

Instead of giving money directly to insurance companies, he wants to give an unspecified amount of money to individuals so that THEY can give it to insurance companies.

Try to contain your excitement.
