No one likes the status quo, it sucks, we all want it to change and if Labour get back into power and refuse to help with that people will turn to the far right and it's bye bye democracy.

not sure what Gen Z has to do with a 43-year-old’s adaptation of a 52-year-old’s novel—and lest you think it’s just the hed, the piece calls Hamnet “mumblecore Shakespeare, conceived for the TikTok generation,” never mind that mumblecore predates TikTok by like 20 years

Stranger Things season five part one is unfortunately mostly wheel spinning. Which was predictable given there wasn't a lot left to do after season 4, but if they really felt the need to break up the episodes into batches like this you'd think they'd want to give this lot a bit more purpose.

The only thing less human than these AI dub performances is the decision to sign off on them

A company this big can pay human actors a decent wage, not produce slop that intentionally removes the human element.

I'm twenty thousand words into the first draft of a new project that I'm somewhat enamored with. The protagonist is very fun to write (she's such a little shit). Feeling very good about where it's headed (had a possibly great idea for the ending yesterday, hope I'm as enthused when I get to it).
#pretendpanel, it's time to check in!

November 28th: It's almost the end of November! How did you go this month? (whether you set a goal, or took part in a challenge, or not!)

Oh my god if you can't actually name trans people as the affected parties here then please shut up it's getting so embarrassing
Shanan has set out our position: we think that the people who make health care decisions should be the person concerned, their medical/health carers, and where appropriate their parents, guardians or caregivers. Politicians shouldn't be involved.

JK Rowling got a full *decade* of press as a martyr for being "cancelled" (declared passe by people online) and meanwhile nobody considers it very interesting that a prominent left wing author is basically banned from entering or publishing in the United Kingdom for her politics
so this is like, one of the biggest free speech infringements by a western democracy in our lifetimes right?

And now since I've been yammering on about my sci fi stuff for a bit, I do actually write other stuff! I'm just a wee bit obsessed with it right now, but most of my stuff is urban fantasy, as is the short story 'Speakeasy' I wrote for the Auckland Queer Writers Anthology, which will be coming out...

Interviewer: “What do you say to trans kids who are starting their transition?”

Zohran Mamdani: "We're gonna make this a city that doesn't just protect trans kids, but also celebrates and cherishes them."

Oh I constantly feel deflated looking at my work and seeing how much shit I wrote that doesn't even make sense. So often I have some clever clogs idea that I never figure out how to make work properly. But y'know, it's fine to not be as good as you want to be yet.
There needs to be a version of "do it scared" for writers that equates to "write it, even if you worry you're not good enough to write it"

Serious answer: David Lynch's Antelope Don't Run No More (um, assuming I can raise the dead in this scenario). Less serious: The Miss Marple film Jennifer Garner was going to star in.
If you were a despotic president, what movie would you force Hollywood to make? I want to see Quentin's Star Trek movie or maybe Kill Bill Vol 3.

Ace from Doctor Who was fully intended to be gay by the writers at the time and it's wacky how much fandom subsequently ignored this regardless of how much they hinted at it on screen.

I think it’s pretty clear at this point that one of the main impacts of LLMs is to disrupt thinking: to make it so that far too many people never properly learn how to do it, and then to control the output so there are thoughts that people never learn how to think.
