My novel DIDO ON THE EDGE coming 2026
Labour, like all centrist parties, exists in an imagined symbiosis with the right. They believe they're in it together with their opponents, maintaining a mutually beneficial status quo, even as the right works to annihilate it and them.
Lads is it good when the two major parties are making near identical ideological frames for the upcoming election, based around no promises, no hope, managerialism forever.

Okay I have questions about the hologram people in the new Star Trek show. How do they touch things? When the main guy makes one glitch out, is that not assault? Do they mind him and others referring to them as "it"?

For Dido on the Edge... uhhh well, depends what you count as a draft. There are versions of that going back to 2009. Let's say a lot. These days I definitely do less, but am bad at keeping track of numbers, one thing I'm working on has definitely had several now.
#pretendpanel, I will get to your answers from yesterday shortly, thank you for your patience. Meanwhile...

To be blunt, we’re your canary. And we’re sick and tired of it. We warn you and you ignore us. Politicians use us to score “good Christian” points. Then y’all act surprised when your rights get stripped away. If you even hint at being anti-trans, you’re an asshole & trash.
It exposes directional alignment; you still seek to limit, not expand, who is allowed to be human. Yes, you have set your limitation more inclusively than our fascist gang of white supremacists; it doesn't mean you're not also setting limitations & they'll use your limit as long as it serves them.
I can't trust politicians who are anti-trans. Not because I'm "only searching for perfection" which is what centrists will be accusing me of for the rest of my life, it's because if you're not pro-trans you'll be garbage on lots of other issues too. Being anti-trans NEVER exists in a vacuum.

At this point I have a pretty good sense of what works for me. It's absolutely a bit messy, I still never really plan anything out, but I'm much better now at making decisions and sticking with them which keeps things moving forward.
#pretendpanel, tell me...

January 16th: Where are you now with the writing process? How has that changed?
e.g. keeping it fun / currently learning processes / adherence to learned processes / breaking out of outgrown processes / something else?

The extent to which major studios are now focused entirely on pleasing a tiny section of white cis male fans is gobsmacking. Forget the box office, all that seems to matter is if nerds on Twitter who called Kelly Marie Tran slurs approve of what you're doing.
Dave Filoni and Lywen Brennan will reportedly replace Kathleen Kennedy as the new co-presidents of Lucasfilm

• Dave Filoni will oversee all creative development

• Lywen Brennan will oversee executive duties

• Announcement is expected to be made in a couple weeks

If you have “sincere concerns” about trans athletes in sports, all it means is that you have given yourself a rationale for your bigotry that you sincerely believe exonerates you for aligning to a far-right tactic for marginalization and exclusion.

Knew this was coming. Something I've been noticing happening slowly for a while now. It's also happening in conjunction with the aging up of YA and the influx of romantasies that tend to feature cisallohet relationships and dabble in fascism-adjacent storytelling themes.

Once you were into Peanuts or Garfield, both on TV a lot in the 90s, it was very easy to move onto other comics because back then they were all formatted exactly the same. When I found a Dilbert book in Whitcoulls as a kid I instantly knew what I was looking at, even if I didn't get the content.
why did so many millennials read so many newspaper comics? easily 60 percent of my reading diet in elementary/middle school was collected editions of calvin and hobbes, farside, dilbert, peanuts, doonesbury (!), foxtrot (?!?) and i know im not alone. historically unique phenomenon
rather than talk about Scott Adams I want to talk about something weirder (me). Who else was really into Dilbert when you were 12. Who else was like, boy, I can't wait to work a cubicle job
January 13, 2026 at 9:34 PM
Scott Adams started out making fun of incompetent leaders with stupid hair and ending begging one for help accessing cancer treatment, only to be ignored. Which is exactly what you get if you pivot away from mocking power to worshipping it.

Actually I don't know if it has all that much. I usually write some test material for them, to see if they start to feel like something, kind of audition them. I've been doing that for years and it works pretty well!
#pretendpanel, maybe this has changed for you, or maybe not! But either way, I'm keen to know...

I think my prose is improving a bit, which I've tended to think was less interesting than my dialogue. I'm getting pretty familar with what my "voice" is like and I'm trying to push myself to vary that. Current thing I'm working on is different and difficult but hopefully worth it.
#pretendpanel, let's get into the hard questions, shall we?

January 9th: How has your craft evolved lately? (as in, your prose, your structuring, voice and tone, etc)

People aren't standing for it. Organisations aren't standing for it. They're going to do it anyway, KNOWING it's going to kill them.
Authors, journalists, media personalities and a sponsor are boycotting the Adelaide festival after it dumped Palestinian Australian author Randa Abdel-Fattah from its annual Writers’ Week lineup.

When Bob Odenkirk was working with Freeman on Fargo, he approached him suggesting they could go over the scene they were shooting and work on their characters. Freeman responded: "don't tell me how to fucking act."

So yeah, classy guy.
Martin Freeman the actor who played Bilbo Baggins and was in The Office with other famous transphobe Ricky Gervais donated to Graham Linehan's legal fund to be let off bullying a trans child and threatening trans people with violence.

Also generally a piece of shit.
