as someone who pushes hard against conspiratorial thinking in my professional and political life, it is deeply irritating when, on top of the untold human harms Epstein caused, it turns out he was at the center of at least half a dozen actual conspiracies

A good reminder that "Jews he's noticed" are Bari Weiss and company. There are absolutely ways that the Epstein horrors are being talking about in antisemitisms (implicating all Jews or attributing behavior to his Jewishness). However, most of us are revolted by the contents, not the release.

Like his whole political project was to use online dipshits to get extreme right wing governments elected throughout Europe and North America and that is exactly what happened, and it all started in exactly the online spaces he had the most influence over. So... maybe online IS real life after all.

While some of what's happening in Minnesota right now IS unprecedented, I do think most of what's going on is far from new, it's just the people experiencing the oppression have these amazing little cameras that can broadcast around the world instantly.
The successful nonviolence and civil rights movements of the past, as I’ve gathered from reading about them, ALSO featured a shit ton of incessant petty drama and in-fighting.

But crucially, they didn’t have social media - so this was kept far more private.

As an historian, I think this modern technology should cause us to revisit every single incident of state violence ever studied. The absolute *certainty* that the state narrative of what happened will be contradicted by the video means our skepticism of the past (already high!) must be doubled.

Of course law enforcement wears masks. They have long not been accountable to "the people." They are their own super-class of people with special rules. It's a symptom; not a cause.

Much of the weird online discourse around protests and the theater of non-violence is a product of many people who feel compelled to weigh in on the subject having a very basic, toy model version of conflict theory in their minds and believe that social analysis is limited to "correct" models.

How about people not listening to this corporate suck and instead center the stories & needs of first, the people being abducted & terrorized into hiding and second actually doing something to protect those at risk… this tool is worse than useless.
“This is not about ICE doing regular ICE stuff.” Mayor Jacob Frey of Minneapolis knows that the confrontation between the federal government and the people of Minnesota is at an inflection point. Nothing has changed and these masked, armed federal paramilitaries are just as aggressive and lawless as ever.
This morning, federal agents staged at the Powderhorn Park Recreation Center lot and began to throw chemical irritants at observers. They also kidnapped an observer. Our parks are meant for our children, youth, and neighbors. They should never be militarized zones meant to separate families. 1/

DFL legislators need to insist on a compensation fund of tens of millions of dollars to offset economic harms of the ICE siege. It infuriates me that Mercado Central has to hold a $500,000 bake sale to hold onto their building. Tens of fucking millions.

I just got tear gassed along with thousands of union members, many of whom had their families with them. Federal agents at the ICE facility tear gassed children. We must abolish ICE, DHS, and we must have prosecutions. I expect to see enforcement of our city code prohibiting the use of tear gas.

It's hard to overstate how ell-organized the portland march that got gassed was... organizers made the crowd promise to be peaceful, said the march would slow in front of the ICE building but not stop, that we would stick to one chant (ICE Out). They did absolutely everything right and got gassed.

I don't like to talk about stories before they are fully reported, but I am writing on ICE in a Minnesota town that isn't Minneapolis. However bad you think it is, it is worse. It is a campaign of pure terror whose only strategic goal is more terror. There is no strategy other than to break people.
