There's a lot packed into this about the idea that women and girls are objects to be desired and used, not people
It has always been so obvious that the backlash to MeToo isn’t about whether the abuse is happening but whether people are allowed to want it to stop

Did you read my post from last week about how contract woes caused me to withdraw an accepted story from F&SF, ending my 54-year quest to be published in that magazine? But wait (as the saying goes) — there's more! Scroll down at the link for an update. www.scottedelman.com/wordpress/20...

I wish this were so much less true than it is.
People see huge backlists and assume that means people are raking in cash but I am telling you, esp writers who have been at it for twenty years: the book you buy might be the only sale for that title all month long. I've got old stuff that only sells one or two copies a year.

Curtis Dozier, author of this forthcoming book on white supremacist engagement with Greece and Rome, has argued that it isn’t “misappropriation.” Sometimes white supremacists actually see the violence in classical texts which liberal readers conveniently gloss over bsky.app/profile/opie...

I had a great conversation about this phenomenon with some sociologists at ASA once. A colleague took me to task for failing to see how they KNOW the reference. They aren’t misreading literary references — they are wielding them to demonstrate their power to shape our ethics.

"Charlotte's Web" is a story about a tiny and nearly invisible creature using the only skills she has to protect a friend and neighbor who's about to be butchered to make the farmer some money, and he returns the favor by caring for her children. Just in case you needed the reminder.

Here it is. The predators are out and it’s terrible
This is some horrifying predatory shit.
When former Harvard President Lawrence H. Summers was pursuing a romantic relationship with a woman he described as a mentee, he turned to a longtime associate for guidance: Jeffrey E. Epstein.

'Even the notion of “quality of life” as a measurable standard is based on assumptions that a “good” healthy life is one without disability, pain, and suffering. I live with all three intimately and I feel more vital than ever at this point in time, because of my experiences and relationships.'
“I’m disabled and need a ventilator to live. Am I expendable during this pandemic?”
As medical rationing becomes a reality, “quality of life” measures threaten disabled people like me.

'To crip something is to bend, compress, twist, subvert, and imbue disabled wisdom into systems, institutions, and cultures. As I’ve done before as a physically disabled person, I will now crip the world ... It takes a tremendous amount of emotional and physical labor to crip the world.'

Becoming a nonspeaking person changed my relationship with time and with other people.

I have a lifetime to think about what a world without Alice in embodied form looks like. To have loved and been loved by her was one of the greatest privileges of my life. I will carry her spirit with me always.
Many thoughts about my cyborg bitch boss goddess accomplice Alice Wong & all the things she meant but there is a tendency for white disabled people to overshadow conversations about disabled BIPOC including in death. I choose to let Alice speak for herself & uplift those she wanted to represent her.

What is subtle?
thing about autism is if you work really hard for many years, you can learn through trial-and-error how to navigate social situations and interpersonal connections SO effectively that people don't really believe you're autistic anymore and resent you for not being perfect at nonverbal communication

Alice Wong was one of the most effective people challenging the Whiteness of disability communities and its many flaws, but who believed fiercely in us as a community, in disabled people as oracles.

Alice brought so much to so many of us, it’s hard to measure the kind of gratitude I have for that.

All week I’ve been thinking about how if we all paid $100 a year in taxes for Snap people wouldn’t be as hungry

How the economy would change
Education
Lives

Or if we increase taxes on the rich for SNAP
Or the minimum wage
What could be diffident

Instead of Trump withholding about $5 tax in Nov
