Los Angeles forever, fascism never
It would be hard to overstate Jimmy Cliff’s influence on worldwide music, culture, and social consciousness, over multiple decades. If you haven’t seen The Harder They Come (or even if you have), this week would be a good time to watch it.

The Harder They Come
Perry Henzell’s reggae-infused outlaw film reflects the political climate of the times, when anti-government movements were sweeping America and the world.

I give zero shits about roasting a turkey. I watched for Kenji's nails, and they did not disappoint.

(I am excited to make his roasted potatoes this week, they're always great but this time I get to try it with goose fat)
We have been using Kenji's turkey advice for a few years. He just posted a NYT Cooking video arguing against using a roasting pan for the turkey.

Looking forward to another week of meetings where I'm told that the solution to everything is to increase our social media presence on Meta and X and have to explain, once again, why I don't use these things to a room full of people who do, so they can say they've "never heard any of this before."
It’s really hard to defend industry academic collaborations with meta as earnest, if they’re internally burying evidence of harm.

THIS. Every effing bit of this. If you want credibility you have to show some discernment skills and the integrity to act on them.
If you’re a journalist who’s still on Twitter, from now on in your writing you have to replace “the American people want” with “troll bots in Eastern Europe demand”

Being there makes your judgment suspect. I don’t care how savvy you think you are, you’re marinating in a disinformation campaign.

the jenga tower of a political-economic movement built solely on transgression: any wrongdoing exposed, then shamelessly bragged about, becomes a point of connection for people who were already primarily connected through their shared transgressions

but you never know when the whole thing will fall
The thing is that they don't care because they know it's either part of the draw for their followers or their followers are too stupid to understand what's happening. This prominent Indian account is bragging about it.

why I’m making a Thanksgiving goose🪿
it is tired to the point of cliche to say if turkey was good, people would make it more than once a year. but it is understated that at least one American explodes every Thanksgiving in a brave attempt to make the main dish more palatable

“The arts remind us that none of the current truisms are absolutes—that there are other ways of living, existing, and being. Arts can exist outside of a tech lord’s algorithm.”

This piece about Abigail McGrath was such a joy and a pleasure to read.

Reconciliation without reparation is one of supremacy's greatest sabotages of the act of repair. Whenever abuse is exposed, it offers free exoneration to the abuser at the expense of the abused, and calls it redemption. It's the traditional and popular response to abuse in our supremacist society.
Leaders of a Minnesota church community didn’t report a parishioner they knew had sexually abused girls for year.

They told his victims that once sins were “washed away in the blood of reconciliation,” they could never speak of them again.

Truly chilling, from @jlussenhop.bsky.social & Andy Mannix

Any other time, any other President, and "the dude was in a global conspiracy to fuck them kids" would have been 24/7 coverage. Even Dubya.

I remember the fucking Lewinsky coverage. Our media have become craven hacks carrying water for rich pedophiles and I feel insane typing that but there it is.

this is the compromise tbh, let’s not sugarcoat it
man we need a way to say "the moral rot and depravity of this country's elite must be burned out of it with cleansing fire" that isn't wildly reactionary-coded

What the Epstein files show is the *solidarity* of many men-across class, race, religion, profession & party affiliation-in the global political project of keeping the boot on women's necks.

People have no problem understanding class solidarity among the rich. Why can't they see gender solidarity?
Like I dunno, maybe the reason it took a lady to break open the story of all the men protecting the dude trafficking underage girls is because the male journos were all emailing him making jokes about it?

Really wild how all these Harvard scientists and mathematics guys constantly talked about how Jeffrey Epstein was this brilliant, "misunderstood" man and then you read his emails and he's clearly a barely literate lecher, extremely easy to understand

Right, these are the two options: Either they tolerated Epstein's eugenics to get to the sex crimes or they tolerated his sex crimes to get to the eugenics
It seems like all of the rich and powerful people around him patronizingly tolerated the race science stuff (“he has such an inquisitive and childlike mind”) in order to get access to his harem of underage sex slaves
The Epstein stuff is always so amazing to me because it's like "yes he was a sex criminal but if you can get past that, he was also an avowed eugenicist"
