The Star Trek model is really helpful here in that “the Computer” often helps move the plot forward but it’s never the architect of the narrative and is not infrequently the foil

Minneapolis is a place that means a lot to me, so I wrote a short Substack about the city, its people, and what we all owe them.

Population Estimates Thread:

1/ We got new Census Bureau population estimates today, and they confirm what we already suspected... population growth slowed dramatically in 2025.

Census estimates the population grew by 1.38M in 2025, vs. a projection of 1.90M a year ago.

For those unfamiliar with Edina this is the Minneapolis equivalent of a Westchester socialite walking down Fifth Avenue singing "John Brown's Body."
They got Edina Moms excoriating the Administration and signing off with a a land acknowledgement. They are so fucked lol

Over here in discount Minnesota, AKA Wisconsin, I just wanna say that I love Minnesota, I love my friends in the Cities, and the idea that the Cites as some crime-ridden hellscape is and always was a lie.

The Spring 2026 course website for my grad causal inference class is up and running. Was inspired by @andrew.heiss.phd and @mattblackwell.bsky.social to move my materials over to a standalone site and use as little of Canvas as possible.

I've increasingly come to view cynicism as the seedbed of totalitarianism, both because it can paralyze the opposition and because it implicitly validates the might-makes-right ethic of the authoritarian.
i have been reading Tom Ricks’ “Fighting the Good War” which is a military analysis of the civil rights movement, and one thing that comes abundantly across is that movement leaders and ordinary people made it a practice to refuse to fall into despair and cynicism.

I see this take around from time to time and totally disagree. ICE just murdered a woman standing up to them. No Kings is among the largest protests in history.

The complacency is coming from elites in media, business, universities, and the Democratic leadership

IMO the wellness stuff is a real hidden minefield in the culture - I had my undergrads do an assignment where they applied a research design concept (measurement, confounding, etc…) to some fact/claim they saw on their social media and most wrote about some health/nutrition thing.
It's such a grim sign of where things stand that I opened up the Sweetgreen app, saw that they've got a new line of meals "designed by Dr. Mark Hyman", looked up his opinions on vaccines and links to RFK, Jr. and... YUP.

This is why “Quiet Posters” is the best feed.
i think this site really needs to figure out how to grow the non-politics verticals (the baseball moment was a good thing!) because i suspect a lot of the bad clusters come out of the political clusters driving 95% of ENG-lang posts
I'd be happy with big non politics accounts.

Many critical AI resources are written for teachers, rather than students. I wrote this for undergrad students dealing with “AI literacy” in the humanities, hoping to raise more fundamental questions about what it means to write. People have added it to syllabi, so maybe you’ll find it useful, too.
