So. Since I've been talking about people picking lanes and working in them, I'm going to pin a list of mine - the skills I have, the topics I generally know enough about to be actually useful in the Current Situation, etc.

Also, I am open to being reached out to about any of these things!
WHAT.
Imagine being a woman in a class taught by a man who said you should have to wear a skirt to prevent men from ogling your “creative sanctuary” (vomit)?

Or that women shouldn’t work at all?

Or you’re a Black student forced to be in the room w a man who said racist drivel abt Africa and “Ebonics”?

I agree with this about 90%.

Instructor with high standards: YES GOOD, very much the most valuable people in the lives of students who give any fucks at all.

Pointless authoritarian viciousness that pretends to be about high standards? IS NOT IT.

(Is also CLEARLY not what happened in this case!)
College students who can’t handle their strictest instructors need to grow up, which is part of what they’re there for. TPUSA and OU are ironically doing the triggered snowflake participation trophy shtick and harming everyone’s ability to grow up in the process

This sums it up.
I just heard that Leslie Fish has passed.

May we remember her as she was, but may the good outweigh the bad.

If one ding-dong uses the R-word and you think it's ok to use the same slur to describe that ding-dong, you're no better than said ding-dong, ding-dong.
I simply cannot with this.
The r-word is a demoralizing slur that should NEVER be used as an insult. Trump did it yesterday and plenty of otherwise tolerant blue accounts jumped on board using it to describe Trump instead.
Take the pledge below to stop using the r-word. It is wholly unacceptable.

My book is on this site. It's out of print in its print edition, so literally the only money I make from it is from ebook royalties. That amounts to, like, $40-$80 CDN per year at this point. "But authors are so rich!"

In completely unrelated news, libraries are awesome.
I posted a buy link here to "A Magical Inheritance" a few days ago, and 24 of you immediately went to Anna's Archives and fucking stole it from me.

Yes, stole it.

I do not get paid for your download there because YOU ARE STEALING FROM ME.

Extremely accurate thread on how book finances work for trade published authors #BookSky

tl;dr it’s not a lot of money per effort year and buying our books at indies makes a material, positive difference
I'm going to do a little thread on how the money from books works for traditionally published authors because people have questions, and this is always useful info to share IMO. First, a big disclaimer that every contract is different, and there are a million factors that can change things. 1/

Hey, so,

If we could NOT respond to the GOP healthcare “plan” with laughter at fat, disabled, and fat disabled people, that would be great.

I hate MarkyMarkwayne as much as the next person, but “take a look at your constituents” is punching in the wrong direction.

I 100% agree and would add that if you are hosting a holiday event and you do NOT have something festive, creative and delicious for your guests to drink without alcohol in it, you are actually an asshole

don't make them drink tap water while everyone else has bespoke cocktails!
Just a friendly reminder as we go into the holidays:

Folks don't have to explain to you why they don't drink.

If you offer them a drink and they decline, don't ask them why. It's not your business.

Just offer them something without alcohol to drink instead. And move on.

Yeahhh. Thread and heads up.
Like, you could write an entire book length case study in "ways Roblox completely fails at Trust and Safety". I advise every parent I know to get their kids the fuck off Roblox, or at the very least, directly monitor who's contacting them and what they're playing *extremely* closely.

A few related reminders:

1) If you're tied into your community and there is specific need (emphasis on SPECIFIC) for volunteers and/or donations, you'll KNOW where to show up (and with what, if anything).

2) A lot of organizations don't want/can't have small children around. Or maybe ANY minors.
DO NOT call up the homeless shelter on thanksgiving or Xmas to see if you can pass a few plates and show your kids the “reason for the season”

The homeless shelter is not a petting zoo of human tragedy! The homeless shelter is not a drive thru nativity scene for you to enjoy!

George Orwell’s Homage to Catalonia. Had to read it for a class and it clearly put a “before” and “after” into how I saw the world, more so than any other book I’ve read.
performative reading, lack of reading skills, nobody's reading anymore -- NO!

tell me about a book that changed you

for me? the *extremely* ahistorical novel, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY which I read at 13 and was like, "Oh, art can be *everything* to a maker, for good and bad"

Very much agreed.
Still saying it: Sports betting should not be legal and widespread. You should still have to go to a casino or find the scary-ass (or scummy-ass) bookie and place your bet with them.

That system, fucked up as it was, really protected a lot of people from themselves, for better or worse.
The Athletic polled hundreds of players from across the NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL about their opinions surrounding how sports betting impacts players — the responses were haunting.

Every decade, we hear "the kids can't read or write!"

Interventions that don't work are proposed. Those that do work are ignored: reducing class sizes, making kids & families feel safe at school and welcome, becoming a community resource.

When their expensive reform fails, they yell at us again.

This is a lot like the advice our city attorney gives area commissions about open meeting rules: “If you’re trying to get around the sunshine laws, don’t.”
Maybe it comes down to what seems to be Rule One of content moderation: Content moderation will sometimes be unfair. One price for using social media is that at some point, you will be moderated unfairly.
Rule Two: Any attempt to get around a rule by being cute is itself a rule violation.

This actually is probably correct in a certain way. Punishing women for their existence and operating under the VERY standard medical belief that women are required to be in pain and they should just endure it is a reasonable explanation for why MAHA would come out against pain medication.

I know. And I frankly wouldn't give even an itty bitty damn if it implicated every Democratic man in Congress, every Democratic hopeful for 2028 and every Democrat who has even thought about running for office.
