Hey Rhode Island. Not keeping up sidewalks and not even building sidewalks in most of your neighborhoods surely counts as more hateful to pedestrians than not plowing.

It’s Veteran’s Day.
They deserve a day, to be housed, fed, and have medical/psychiatric care. They deserve a living wage, and to not be maimed/injured/killed because some wealthy know nothing used them like checkers. They deserve to have the careers they work hard for regardless of sex/gender/id.

Autumn allergies, time change, and the curse of living in interesting times are very difficult for my ME/CF self. We've also been considering several stressful (but positive) changes.

A view in Roger Williams Park in Providence Rhode Island. You're looking down a path that goes along the waters edge of Roosevelt Lake. The ground is covered in fresh crispy autumn leaves. To each side are large trees with their dark orange and burgundy leaves preparing to float down with their fallen comrades. The focus of the photo is across the water. The Bandstand, a structure with 12 Corinthian columns support a 30-foot diameter dome roof. Rebuilt in 1915 it's been the parks center for music since 1901. Breaking up it's reflection in the water is a large floating fountain in the middle of the lake. It gives the reflection interest between the reflection of autumn colors and the white of the Bandstand.

Looking at this picture, you now know that this is not an illustrated book, the words draw the pictures, but you get the impression that you will not need pictures because you will enjoy these words very much.

It is a neighborhood group: four people were kidnapped at the corner drugstore. A friend a mile away sends a Slack message: she was at the scene when masked men assaulted and abducted two people on the street. A plumber working on my pipes is distraught, and I find out that two of his employees were kidnapped that morning. A week later it happens again. An email arrives. Agents with guns have chased a teacher into the school where she works. They did not have a warrant. They dragged her away, ignoring her and her colleagues’ pleas to show proof of her documentation. That evening I stand a few feet from the parents of Rayito de Sol and listen to them describe, with anguish, how good Ms. Diana was to their children. What it is like to have strangers with guns traumatize your kids. For a teacher to hide a three-year-old child for fear they might be killed. How their relatives will no longer leave the house. I hear the pain and fury in their voices, and I wonder who will be next. Understand what it is to pray in Chicago. On September 19th, Reverend David Black, lead pastor at First Presbyterian Church of Chicago, was praying outside the ICE detention center in Broadview when a DHS agent shot him in the head with pepper balls. Pepper balls are never supposed to be fired at the head because they can seriously injure, or even kill. “We could hear them laughing as they were shooting us from the roof,” Black recalled. He is not the only member of the clergy ICE has assaulted. The coordinated nature of this—none are facing voters in 2026—means that either Schumer approved it or failed in his job as Senate Majority Leader to stop it.

Dems voting "no" get zero credit until they demand a change in leadership. Schumer out as Leader, Durbin out as Whip.

Tiny hamlets like Montpelier might be able to have good transit AND make it free, but a massive metropolis like Providence could never pull it off. Plus Providence is an old city with legacy infrastructure and challenging coastal soils. Nothing Montpellier had to deal with

But it's meaningful in feeling. The teacher says "do problems six and seven," and boom - a shared moment. Laughter. A known way of moving your hands. It's nonsense that makes sense socially. Because for ten seconds, you belong. That's the part adults miss. They see the noise and not the nervous system. They see a distraction, not a micro-moment of connection. Think about when you were a kid. What's better than a moment of feeling like you're part of something? Of being in the "in" crowd even for just a few seconds? That feeling is intoxicating. Kids have jokes that make no sense, chants that drive adults nuts, moments that are meaningless on paper - but what's critical to remember is that all of these are full of meaning in belonging. So if your kid says "6/7..." and everyone laughs, allow yourself to take a trip down memory lane. Remember that time in math class you caught another student's eye and laughed about something that made you two feel closer. Remember what it was like to have a seat at the lunch table. Because "6/7" isn't about numbers - it's about being seen. And nothing matters more than that.
