Lots of people comparing Senate Democrats to Charlie Brown trying to kick the football, but that analogy only works in a version where Lucy has told Charlie Brown she's going to pull it away, and also that afterwards she's going to have Snoopy executed in a foreign prison

The coordinated nature of this—none are facing voters in 2026—means that either Schumer approved it or failed in his job as Senate Majority Leader to stop it.

Dems voting "no" get zero credit until they demand a change in leadership. Schumer out as Leader, Durbin out as Whip.
so currently defectors are:

Kaine (2030)
Shaheen (Retiring)
Hasan (2028)
Fetterman (2028)
Durbin (Retiring)
CCM (2028)
Rosen (2030)
King (2030)

What an amazing essay from the former chair of Africana Studies at Bowdoin. I'll share a few sections in the reply but seriously, read the whole thing. It's all insightful and beautifully written.

If you're going to rely on "strong assurances" from Republicans then you're stupid and weak and you should resign.

There is only one path to getting Democratic assistance with anything: the House reopens, swears in Adelita Grijalva, then passes an acceptable budget.

You gently run your hand through the rack. You can feel it—pure cotton, rich wool, Irish linen. The plump buttonholes are handsewn; the buttons attached with a firm shank. You flip the price tag over. It's affordable

You buy the jacket and go home, which is only 15 mins away. Your apt is $600/month

ME: A lot of people have, so
CHOTINER: You were looking for engagement?
ME: Well, to make someone laugh I guess
CHOTINER: How many likes and reposts did it get?
ME: That's, uh, not really the metric...look can we start over

Chotiner: and then you didn't send him to jail, and he ran again?

USA: I mean yes but we do have pretty robust institutions, you know, the supreme court and so on

Chotiner: I see. So they were able to stop the worst of it?

USA: Well now it um the thing you have to understand
I briefly visualized Chotiner sitting down to interview the USA
so for future reference if you're too embarrassed by what you've done to ever show your face in public again but as a whole-ass country, how does that work? just logistically

I am activating the nuclear-grade subtweet machine here but I cannot stand the genre of article that goes "Trump is wrong to attack XYZ institution—but XYZ institution *does* need reform" and then just says we should discuss reforming XYZ institution but doesn't propose a coherent plan of its own

New, from me:
It was a terrible week, one that inspired some truly awful takes. The worst was the effort by Bari Weiss and The Free Press to smear universities as "the biggest culprits" to blame American political violence, with faculty training "jihadis."
