cities, transportation, transit, and other intermittent discussion.
Interesting data here, but I am curious about how many of these cars with VA plates are actually VA drivers:

It is indeed interesting, but they buried the most salient incentive for local jurisdictions at the end of the article:

These things generate massive revenue for local jurisdictions; and even accounting for their externalities, they cost very little to serve (eg no students in public schools)

Apparently Utrecht's bus system is falling apart.

Made the decision to switch from diesel to all electric.

Failed to:
- install enough chargers.
- buy enough buses for added downtime.

In Dutch tradition, 1/5 drivers are now burnt out from the stress from the change.

ooooh gonna have to read this paper.
Good paper re current state procurement rules that prioritize procedural transparency enforced by adversarial legalism in an effort to obtain "low bids" over administrative discretion to choose best value.

Potts shows how this has not always been the case and is the result of historic legal drift.

I hope someone, somewhere got this on a dash cam…
Somehow a car wound up on the Metro tracks in the middle of I-66 just west of the Dunn Loring station. Orange Line trains are not operating between West Falls Church & Vienna. Metro says they’ll let us know when they have more information on how in the world this happened. #wmata

Our argument is simple but radical: transportation policy should maximize access, not movement.

For a century, we’ve measured success by car throughput and speed. But that's only a means. The end is connecting people to destinations they value.

We've been measuring, then building, the wrong thing.

Anyone who cites rotisserie chickens as an indulgence can be completely disregarded when it comes to grocery budgeting. It’s not even like avocados, “well, expensive for a fruit but they don’t actually add up to that much.” Rotisserie chickens are one of the most cost-effective food purchases.

this is absolutely insane.
The El Paso TFR issued by the FAA even grounds medivac flights. NO EXCEPTIONS. Any flight operating in the area may be deemed hostile and “the United States government may use deadly force against the airborne aircraft.”

Anyone needing a lifeline flight to a hospital or outside El Paso will die.

NHL, as always, gets the trophy presentation right. Give the cup to the captain, players, then coaches, then owner? I guess.

And the NFL is presenting it in the complete opposite order.

M! V! P!
Michael Dickson has what must be the best punting performance in Super Bowl history:

7 punts, 47.9 average yardage
3 downed inside the 6-yard line
Only two returned, for four total yards
Multiple good holds on bad kicking snaps

so that was great.

is it just me, or is that whole concept and production design way more ambitious than any other halftime show?

That’s right.
Today we have US transit data for all of 2025, & DC's WMATA was officially the fastest-growing major US agency, with ridership up 8.7%!

The LIRR (NY, 6.4%), King County Metro (Seattle, +6.5%) & SEPTA (Philly, +4.7%) performed well, while LA Metro & NJTransit lost riders🧵
