I recall @eean.dev getting ratio’d for observing during the Biden administration the obsequiousness the admin and Congress pays to air travel compared to any other form of transportation or communication.
Bartels did a study 20+ years ago looking at how much a member of Congress' record coincided with their constituents' views, broken down by income. MCs are a lot more responsive to their wealthier constituents. Think about whom SNAP and flight delays affect. www.russellsage.org/sites/defaul...

Many of California’s patchwork statewide transit capital programs were established in the mid 2010s in an extended period of no/low inflation when the fiscal costs of years piecing together a bunch of grant awards were much lower.

Two schools of thought on how to build more walkable greenfield development
- do more one off urbanist greenfield projects (CNU strategy for the past 35 years)
- change federal rules for mortgage subsidies, land use rules, state road building practices, building codes, construction defect etc

Utah Transit Authority's 5 Year Capital Plan makes a good argument for the benefits of multi-year framework agreements for transportation capital construction funding.

Service-led planning is exactly for use cases like this! The whole region should be playing moneyball to squeeze performance improvements wherever they can be found. And by “performance” I mean better experiences for riders.

previous 60 bus to campus departed 2 minutes before the Berryessa BART train arrived.
seems like a little coordination of BART schedules and 60 bus schedules could reduce the wait time for transferring passengers a lot

Electrification and level boarding platforms can significantly improve rail travel on the west coast, too.

Always wild that UTA is one the most forward thinking transit agencies in the country
Utah's UTA is state-managed, funded by 5-year investment frameworks, and uses service-led planning. It's no wonder FrontRunner has plans for electrification while Metrolink and LOSSAN are still avoiding the issue, despite serving more people. rideuta.legistar.com/LegislationD...

It’s pretty interesting how pundits can proclaim that Zohran’s pro-housing policies are insincere or not true YIMBYism but Abigail Spanberger’s straight up opposition to state land use preemption of local governments for ADUs and small apartments upzoning and approvals just gets shrugged off.

Did a presentation for a state building officials conference today, and I mentioned some stuff about other countries. The first question was somebody asking me if we can really compare ourselves to other countries’ codes when they don’t take into account and life and safety. Almost a verbatim quote!

California as part of growing state capacity and standardization across the mainline rail network should produce a document like this. Standard stations is an easy win. Right now there’s no standardization between the operators
