I'm always amazed when people say "we need to plan for the future" & what they mean is "we need to plan to have enough parking to park everyone today & all the new cars added until that future date" rather than, we need to plan for infill dev, more busses, more transit, more bikes & less cars!

ACTION ALERT!

The "save-our-parking" folks are having a zoom meeting TOMORROW, February 17th, at 6pm!

A group of business owners is cynically using painted bus lanes to sabotage a Complete Streets project along Grand Avenue, from Damen to Ogden.

Please show up & tell them you support bike lanes!

Check out our letter in today’s @chicagotribune.com.

Supporters of the Archer/Kedzie redesign are hopeful that this project will make it safer to get around the neighborhoods we call home: Brighton Park and the surrounding communities of Gage Park, McKinley Park, Archer Heights, and Little Village.

A big turnout tonight by Chicago cyclists to show support for the new Archer ave. protected Bike lanes #Chicago
February 17, 2026 at 7:25 AM
"A safer and more inviting Archer would encourage more trips by bike or on foot — especially short trips within the neighborhood. This would ease traffic congestion, increase foot traffic for local businesses and provide more opportunities for neighbors to see each other face to face"
Letters: The protected bike lanes on Archer Avenue have many supporters
Of course, there are opponents of the project, but they do not represent the entirety of the neighborhood.

“Car infrastructure first” has failed—loud, polluted, and dangerous streets are the result. Build people infrastructure (sidewalks, protected lanes, safer crossings, transit priority) and we get calmer traffic and healthier communities. Newton is the latest proof.

If you put bike lanes everywhere in the city, it stops being viewed as a symbol of gentrification. They stop becoming an "amenity" that brings better personal safety and higher quality of life. If one person said a new road with speed bumps would bring gentrification, they'd sound ridiculous.

In 2014, New York City lowered its citywide default speed limit from 30 mph to 25 mph. In the year that followed:

- Traffic fatalities fell by more than 22 percent

- Pedestrian fatalities fell by more than 25 percent

transalt.org/reports-list...
Also, most car crashes occur at intersections, and not because a car was exceeding the speed.

My bet is that even if you made it so no one could speed anywhere, it would only marginally lower traffic fatalities.

And this doesn't even include registration, insurance, and maintenance. This is part of why we need the choice of affordable and accessible transit
