Our comments on @cityofoakland.bsky.social's "Oakland for All" vision plan.

Oakland needs a concrete plan, and responsible team, for delivering improvements to avoid repeating its past failures to develop housing and infrastructure throughout the city eastbayforeveryone.org/2025/08/20/o...

After 42 years, Berkeley is kicking street festivals off of Telegraph Ave. because the fire department has decided on a new, stricter interpretation of the fire code that does not allow 26-ft. fire lanes required next to buildings of 30+ ft. to be blocked even by a street festival
New city fees, fire safety policies threaten future of 2 beloved Berkeley events, organizers say
Berkeley's Juneteenth Festival and Telegraph Holiday Fair can't stay in their longtime locations, according to city.

I couldn’t interest anybody in NYC in the details of our $1+ billion effort, but you guys have some really top-notch gadflies in Oakland, so it is worth looking into the mechanics of how corners are being chosen, how much it will balloon, whether it’s all truly necessary, and what could be changed

If it's in Oakland, make sure to report it in SeeClickFix & use the word "bike" or "bicycle" in the description. This will flag it in our @bikeeastbay.bsky.social watch area to be added to the "top ten" priority list sent to OakDOT monthly. I'll review & try to make birthday wishes come true!

Whatever level of sophistication you can muster would be appreciated. Fine to send a quick/simple one.

You can file a public records request for the cities where officers have their primary residence; the results are revealing, both for stuff like this and how unaffordable this area is even for well compensated city employees

This lot is a synecdoche for development in downtown Oakland pre and post COVID

In 2019 the property owner wanted to preserve the warehouse and build a 6 story office/retail.

In 2023 they wanted to demolish the warehouse to build 28k sqf of surface parking.

Upzoning plus the large lots of uptown Oakland worked amazingly. Highlights both the promise of zoning reform from efforts like SB79, and also the need to make apartment construction on smaller lots easier (single stair reform) if we want to replicate this success.
Every so often I look up the rents for the Nook on Valdez, a micro-unit project in downtown Oakland built about 10 years ago. They are currently renting units affordable to people at 45% of AMI. This is a market-rate project that pays property taxes.
