If you ask me, “Where’s Oakland?” I’ll tell you it’s in my heart.
Now that voters have also turned on Trump over the economy despite real wages increasing, has Will Stancil expressed any reflection or self-awareness? Not going to wade through 50k posts to find out.

Open to the idea that Newsom’s experimentation over the last year was like when Lil Wayne started using Autotune. Was trainwreck bad for a bit but then the shit started actually working.

They really had the chance to drive his popularity down to the low 30s or below and functionally end his presidency, and they blinked. Cowards.

I bet there are a whole bunch of policies CA could adopt to move the construction industry away from light wood frame and towards CMU block, mass timber, etc.

Can’t believe Nithya Raman is trying to change LA’s rent control to limit rent increases to 60% of CPI. Awful policy.

Housing policy expert (??) Ezra Klein is a strong supporter of inclusionary (?) and artist (??) housing??

Met with the Fire Marshal today and he seemed to have a surprisingly pro-development stance…even threw the local water authority under the bus for their delays and onerous requirements.

So there are at least 3 apartment projects in Oakland that were literally abandoned mid-construction?? 😬

At a polling station and let’s just say the electorate looks a lot different than it did a year ago.

A councilmember in my city asked about how we could fill in the gaps if the federal shutdown affects Section 8 payments. We calculated the total value of S8 payments in our city at $7 Million per month. Not something we have laying around under the couch cushions.

Because this skew has met declining household sizes, the country now has a real abundance of units with lots of bedrooms compared to households with lots of people:

Hot take: Bluesky urbanism is not only 100x better than current X urbanism, it’s better than the glory days of Twitter urbanism, which were mostly dumb fights with AHF staffers about gentrification.

I’ll be the first one to say that bond deals are way too complex, with too many consultants and attorneys taking their bite at the apple. But this article feels like No Bedtime Leftism. Debt has to be repaid, and bondholders charge a premium to higher-risk borrowers. That’s not an evil conspiracy.
If Zohran Mamdani wins the mayoral race next month, he’ll face some major constraints funding his campaign promises. @schooldaves.bsky.social writes on the straitjacket of the municipal bond market.

Should Zohran Mamdani become the next mayor of New York City, he will be restricted by the municipal bond market.

I listened to the Rest is History podcast episode on Caligula, and let’s just say there are certain parallels.

I’ll admit, I’m starting to get some sick pleasure watching senior city staff (in another city) try to squirm out of their Housing Element commitments. During a meeting today I finally said, “have you taken a look at the latest changes to the Builder’s Remedy?”

“Because they got tariffs on bacon.”

There have got to be more solutions for ”end-of-life” care for old apartment buildings than just “maybe the government will help buy them and subsidize them indefinitely.”
San Diego’s dorm-style housing is disappearing as the need grows

San Diego is facing a decline in dorm-style housing despite an increasing need for such accommodations. Efforts to address the issue are underway, but they have not yet proven effective in…

The city is trying to turn that around. But so far, it’s not working.

Man. RIP P.E.A.C.E. of Freestyle Fellowship. Bea Hall herself told me that he was the best freestyler to come out of the Good Life cafe. I have an old recording of him freestyling on a late night radio show that lives forever in my head.

Not to be cringe, but I'm surprised I am emotional seeing the East Wing demolition. My first job in DC was interning and going to meetings there regularly. I learned everything about it while giving guided tours. The beauty of the East Wing is that everyone can go there. It's America's house.
